What moves the price

  • Type of pest — a one-visit ant or spider treatment costs less than a multi-visit rat or mouse control plan
  • Size of the infestation — a few insects are cleared quickly, an established colony needs repeat pest treatments
  • Number of visits — rodent and cockroach work usually needs follow-up checks, each built into the price
  • Size of the property — treating a whole house or a block of flats takes longer than one room
  • Proofing — sealing gaps, vents and pipe runs so pests cannot return adds materials and labour
  • London and the South East — pest controllers there charge noticeably more than the rest of the UK

How to pay less

  • Check whether your council runs a pest control service before booking a private treatment
  • Act at the first sign of pests, as a small infestation needs fewer treatment visits
  • Clear food, clutter and rubbish that attract pests so the treatment works first time

Before you book

  • Ask whether the pest controller belongs to a trade body such as BPCA or NPTA and carries insurance
  • Tell the pest controller about children, pets and fish tanks so baits and sprays are placed safely
  • Confirm how many visits the pest control price includes and what a further visit costs
  • Keep the written pest control report, as a landlord, buyer or managing agent may ask to see it

Pest Control cost: questions people ask

£100–£300 per treatment, with about £150 typical. One-visit insect treatments cost least; rat and mouse plans with proofing, especially in London, cost most.

Insects such as ants and wasps often need one visit. Rats, mice and cockroaches usually need two or three spread over a few weeks.

Some councils in England and Wales still offer pest control for wasps, rats, mice and bedbugs, sometimes for a fee. GOV.UK has a tool to find out what your council provides.

A trained technician places baits in tamper-resistant boxes and chooses products to suit the home. Tell them about pets and children before they start.

Large proofing jobs, repairs to chewed wiring or insulation, and woodworm treatment are quoted separately.
