Hedge Trimming cost in the UK
£20–£50 per hour. Typically £30.

Hedge trimming costs £20–£50 an hour in the UK, with £30 an hour a fair middle figure. Height matters most: anything over two metres needs ladders or a platform and slows the work. Length, how overgrown the hedge is, removing the clippings and a London address push the rate up.

What moves the price

  • Height — hedge trimming above two metres needs ladders, platforms and more care, so it is slower
  • Length — a long boundary hedge takes many more hours than a short run by the front door
  • Condition — an overgrown hedge cut back hard takes far longer than a yearly shape
  • Clippings — bagging and taking the cuttings away adds tip charges to the hedge job
  • Species — fast-growing leylandii and laurel need more cutting than slow box or yew
  • London and the South East — hedge cutting rates there are the highest in the UK

How to pay less

  • Book hedge trimming every year so each cut is light and quick rather than a hard cut-back
  • Keep the hedge low enough to trim from the ground without platforms or towers
  • Shred or compost the hedge clippings in the garden instead of paying to have them taken away

Before you book

  • Check the hedge for nesting birds first — damaging an active nest is an offence
  • Agree whether the hedge trimming price includes taking the clippings away
  • Tell the gardener whether you want the hedge reduced in height or only tidied
  • Ask the neighbour for access if the far side of the hedge is on their land

Hedge Trimming cost: questions people ask

£20–£50 an hour, with around £30 a fair middle figure. A low hedge outside London is cheapest per hour; a tall leylandii in London needing a platform is dearest.

One to three hours for a standard hedge. A tall boundary or a hedge that needs cutting back hard can take most of a day.

Late summer to early autumn suits most hedges. Cutting in spring and early summer risks disturbing nesting birds, which is an offence if a nest is damaged.

If talking does not work, councils in England and Wales can deal with a complaint about a high evergreen hedge, usually for a fee.

Taking the hedge out completely, felling trees and grinding stumps are separate jobs with their own prices.
