Turfing cost in the UK
£11–£30 per m². Typically £15.
New turf supplied and laid costs £11–£30 per m² in the UK, and about £15 is typical for standard rolls on ground in fair shape. The grade of turf matters less than the preparation: lifting an old lawn, killing weeds and levelling the soil is where most of the bill goes.

What moves the price
- Ground preparation — stripping an old lawn and levelling bumpy soil costs more than the turf rolls themselves
- Turf grade — budget utility turf is cheapest, while luxury and wildflower meadow turf cost much more per square metre
- Lawn size — a small area still needs a turf delivery and a crew, so it costs more per square metre
- Topsoil — poor or stony soil needs fresh topsoil spread and raked in before the turf is laid
- Waste removal — taking away old turf, roots and rubble adds a skip or a green-waste trip to the lawn job
- Region — turfing crews in London and the South East charge more per square metre than elsewhere

How to pay less
- Lift the old lawn and clear weeds yourself so the turfing crew only levels and lays
- Choose standard turf rather than luxury grades unless the lawn is purely ornamental
- Turf in autumn or early spring, when the new lawn roots with less watering and is less likely to need re-turfing
Before you book
- Plan the first weeks of watering, as a new lawn laid in a dry spell needs soaking almost daily
- Ask whether the turfing quote includes topsoil, levelling and taking away the old lawn
- Check your water company has no hosepipe ban in force before turf is laid in summer
- If old turf and soil are taken away, the firm should hold a waste carrier registration
Turfing cost: questions people ask
£11–£30 per m², about £15 for standard turf. Good ground and budget rolls cost least; heavy preparation and premium turf in the South East cost most.
A typical back garden takes one to three days. Most of that time is preparation, as laying the rolls is quick once the soil is level.
Keep off it for about two to three weeks while the roots knit into the soil, and wait for it to root firmly before the first light mow.
Turf gives a usable lawn in weeks rather than months and beats the weeds from day one. Seed is cheaper but needs patience and the right season.
Lawn edging, ongoing feed and weed treatments, mowing visits and artificial grass are all priced as separate jobs.
