What moves the price

  • Location — gardening rates in London and the South East are well above those in the North and Scotland
  • Type of gardening work — mowing and weeding cost less an hour than pruning or hedge work
  • Regular or one-off — a booked fortnightly slot is usually cheaper per hour than a one-off tidy
  • Equipment — a gardener bringing a ride-on mower, strimmer or hedge cutter charges more
  • Green waste — taking clippings away adds tip charges on top of the hourly rate
  • Spring and summer — gardeners are busiest when the lawn grows fastest and diaries fill early

Or post the job free and let them come to you, or book by the hour.

How to pay less

  • Book the gardener for a regular slot rather than calling them when the garden is overgrown
  • Do the light weeding between visits so the paid gardening hours go on skilled work
  • Compost clippings in the garden so you do not pay for them to be taken away

Before you book

  • Agree the hourly rate, the minimum visit and which gardening jobs come first
  • Ask whether the gardener has public liability insurance before mowing near cars and windows
  • If you pay a gardener directly who is not self-employed, you may count as their employer
  • Show the gardener which plants to keep and where the garden waste should go

Gardening cost: questions people ask

£25–£49 an hour, with around £30 a fair national average. Rates outside the big cities sit lower; a London gardener with powered equipment sits higher.

Most visits run two to four hours. Many gardeners have a minimum visit, and a full day suits a large garden or a catch-up after a missed season.

Most gardeners are self-employed and invoice you. If you set their hours and pay them directly with no business of their own, you could be treated as their employer.

Usually, yes, for small and medium hedges. Tall or long hedges may be priced as a separate hedge-cutting job.

Plants, compost, waste disposal and bigger jobs like tree work or landscaping are normally extra.
