What moves the price

  • Number of circuits — rewiring one kitchen circuit costs far less than a whole floor
  • Access — lifting boards and chasing solid walls adds time to a partial rewire
  • Consumer unit — older boards may need replacing to protect the new circuits
  • Condition of remaining wiring — an EICR may find more circuits needing work
  • Room in use — rewiring a lived-in kitchen or bathroom takes more care
  • Making good — plastering and decorating after chasing new rewiring are often priced separately

How to pay less

  • Combine a partial rewire with a kitchen or bathroom refit, when walls and floors are already open
  • Use an EICR to target only the circuits that need replacing
  • Plan socket and light positions in advance so the partial rewire is done once

Before you book

  • A partial rewire is notifiable under Part P, so use an electrician registered with NICEIC or NAPIT
  • Ask whether the remaining wiring will be tested and what happens if faults are found
  • Check whether the consumer unit needs replacing to protect the new circuits
  • Ask whether making good plaster is included in the rewiring quote

Partial Rewiring cost: questions people ask

£1,200–£4,500 per job, about £3,000 typical. One kitchen or bathroom costs least; a whole floor with a new consumer unit costs the most.

Two to five days for most jobs, depending on how many circuits are replaced.

If an EICR flags only certain circuits, a partial rewire can be enough. Old cable throughout the house usually means a full rewire is better value.

Often, if the existing board lacks RCD protection for the new circuits. The electrician will advise after testing.

Plastering, decorating and new light fittings are usually extra. Ask for the making good to be listed separately.
