What moves the price

  • Layout and size — a single straight run costs a fraction of an L- or U-shaped outdoor kitchen with a bar
  • Appliances — a built-in gas grill, pizza oven and outdoor fridge can cost as much as the build itself
  • Worktops and units — granite, porcelain and stainless steel outlast cheaper timber but cost more to buy
  • Running services — water, drainage, gas and electrics down the garden need a plumber, gas engineer and electrician
  • Base and shelter — a new concrete slab, patio or pergola roof over the kitchen adds a separate build
  • Access to the garden — masonry, stone worktops and appliances carried through a house add labour

How to pay less

  • Build the outdoor kitchen next to the house so water, gas and power runs stay short
  • Choose modular kitchen units over a bespoke masonry build if the layout is simple
  • Start with a quality grill and worktop and add a pizza oven or fridge later

Before you book

  • Any gas grill or hob in the outdoor kitchen connected to the mains is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Electrics for an outdoor kitchen are notifiable work, so use an electrician in a competent person scheme
  • A roofed structure over the kitchen may need planning permission if it breaks permitted development limits
  • Agree how the kitchen units, worktop and sink will be protected from frost over winter

Outdoor Kitchen cost: questions people ask

£2,000–£20,000 per project, about £6,000 typical. A compact barbecue counter costs least; a large L-shaped kitchen with gas, water, power and a roof costs most.

Three to seven days for most projects. Running services and building a new base can stretch that.

A Gas Safe registered engineer must connect any mains gas appliance, and new outdoor circuits should be installed and certified by a registered electrician under Part P.

An open kitchen on a patio usually does not. A roof or enclosed structure over it is treated like an outbuilding and must stay within permitted development height and size limits, or it needs consent.

The patio or decking it stands on, separate pergolas, lighting schemes and furniture are generally quoted on their own.
