What moves the price
- What you buy — a concept sketch costs far less than a full garden design pack with construction drawings
- Size of the garden — design fees rise with the area, though the rate per m² falls on bigger plots
- Levels and surveys — a sloping garden often needs a measured or topographical survey first
- Planting plan — a plant-by-plant planting scheme is an extra stage on top of the layout
- 3D visuals and revisions — each extra view or round of changes adds to the design fee
- London and the South East — garden designers there charge the highest day rates

How to pay less
- Ask the garden designer for a concept plan only and build it yourself or with a landscaper
- Bring a clear budget and a short list of what the garden needs so the design does not need extra revisions
- Ask whether the garden design fee is credited if the same firm builds the scheme
Before you book
- Agree in writing which garden design stages, drawings and revisions the fee covers
- Check whether planning permission is needed for raised decks, outbuildings or front garden paving in the design
- Ask to see past garden plans and finished gardens by the same designer
- Find out whether the designer's plans are detailed enough for landscapers to price from
Garden Design cost: questions people ask
£500–£5,000 for a project, with about £1,950 typical. A concept plan for a small garden is at the cheap end; a full master plan with planting, construction drawings and 3D views for a large London garden is dearest.
One to four weeks from the first visit to finished plans. Large gardens, surveys and several rounds of changes can stretch it.
Most garden work does not, but a deck more than 30cm off the ground, a large outbuilding, or paving a front garden in a non-permeable surface can. A good designer flags these early.
On a bigger build it usually is: a clear plan lets landscapers quote like for like and avoids costly changes once work starts.
The build itself — landscaping, paving, planting and lighting — is paid for separately from the design.
