What moves the price
- Length of the fence — the cost of a fencing project rises with every metre of panels and posts
- Panel style — basic lap panels cost least, closeboard, hit-and-miss and composite panels cost more
- Posts — concrete posts and gravel boards last longer than timber but add to the fence price
- Taking down the old fence — removing and disposing of old panels and posts is extra work
- Ground and access — roots, rubble and gardens reached only through the house slow the fencing crew
- Storm season — after winter gales, fencing installers are booked up and less open to a keen price

How to pay less
- Choose concrete fence posts and gravel boards so the panels can be swapped without new posts later
- Share the cost of a boundary fence with the neighbour on the other side where you both benefit
- Book fencing work in late spring or summer, after the winter storm rush has eased
Before you book
- Check the deeds or ask the neighbour who owns the boundary before a new fence goes up
- A fence over two metres high, or one metre next to a road, needs planning permission
- Ask whether the fencing quote covers taking away the old panels, posts and concrete
- Mark buried cables, pipes and drains so the fence post holes miss them
Fencing Installer cost: questions people ask
From about £60 for a single replacement panel up to £2,100 for a long boundary, with a six-panel run of around 11 metres typical at £1,050. A short repair costs least; a long run on concrete posts with the old fence taken away costs most.
A panel or two takes a few hours. A typical back garden run takes one to two days, allowing the concrete round the posts to firm up.
Not usually, as long as it is no more than two metres high, or one metre next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings, conservation areas and estates with an Article 4 direction can have tighter rules.
The owner of the boundary is responsible, which is often shown on the title plan. Many neighbours agree to share the cost of a new fence.
Gates, garden walls, hedge removal and treating or painting the new fence are normally separate costs.
