What moves the price
- Type of block — plain concrete blocks are the cheapest paving, with clay and natural stone at the top
- Excavation and sub-base — a deep Type 1 base for cars costs more than a footpath or patio
- Permeable or not — permeable block paving needs a special open-graded base but avoids a planning application
- Pattern and cuts — herringbone, borders and curves mean more cutting and slower laying
- Drainage and edging — channel drains and kerb edging are priced on top of the paved area
- Region — block paving crews in London and the South East charge the most per m²

How to pay less
- Choose plain concrete blocks in a simple stretcher bond rather than a complex block paving pattern
- Lay the drive in permeable block paving so you avoid the cost and wait of a planning application
- Keep and relay sound blocks from an old block paving drive if the base underneath is the only problem
Before you book
- Ask whether the block paving quote includes digging out, the sub-base depth and taking the spoil away
- Check with the council whether a dropped kerb is needed before a new driveway is paved
- If more than five square metres of front garden is paved, plan for permeable blocks or drainage to a lawn
- Ask the paving installer what guarantee covers sinking or movement in the blocks
Block Paving cost: questions people ask
£50–£134 per m² laid, with about £100 typical for a standard concrete block driveway. Simple concrete blocks on an easy site cost least; clay or permeable blocks in the South East cost most.
Three to five days for most driveways. Digging out and building the base takes the first days; laying, cutting and compacting the blocks takes the rest.
Not if the paving is permeable, or the rainwater runs to a lawn or border. Paving more than five square metres of front garden in an impermeable surface without that needs permission.
Often, yes. If the blocks are sound and only the base has failed, relaying them is cheaper than buying new ones.
Dropped kerbs, gates, garden walls and connections to the drains are normally priced as separate jobs.
