BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No licence or register applies to drainage contractors in any UK nation, so anyone may offer a CCTV drain survey. The checks that matter are whose drain it is, the contractor's insurance and a written record of what was found.
Ask for the business name, the insurer and a written report or invoice for the a CCTV drain survey.
Whose drain it is
In England, council guidance explains that from 1 October 2011 sewer pipes outside property boundaries, and pipes shared with a neighbour, passed to the sewerage company; you remain responsible for pipes that serve only your home and sit inside your boundary. That can decide who pays for the drain survey.
Before paying for the drain survey, ask the contractor whether the fault is in a drain serving only you, or a shared or public one. hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk →
Insurance and trader status
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires a drain survey to be done with reasonable care and skill; a written report is how you can tell. Ask whether the business carries public liability insurance.
Look for the trader badge and the insurer's name before the drain survey.
VAT
A CCTV drain survey is standard-rated at 20%, and so is any jetting done to clear the line for the camera. Registration is compulsory above £90,000 of taxable turnover, and a registered firm has to charge it and itemise it rather than fold it into the price.
Ask the survey firm for its VAT number and whether the report price includes VAT. gov.uk →
A good answer: A stated scope: which runs, from which chambers.
A good answer: Yes, all three, usually within a few days.
A good answer: Where they can tell — private, shared or public.
A good answer: A plain answer about format and detail.
A good answer: A view, and a price, if the camera cannot see.
A good answer: No. A survey with no strings is worth more.
