  3. Fix the call-out in writingCall-out fee, what it covers, the hourly rate after it, in a message before they set off.
  4. Smell gas? Different callA gas leak is not a plumbing emergency; leave it to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  5. Photograph everythingDamage, the burst, the repair and the invoice — your insurer will want them.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

No register applies

No licence or register applies to emergency plumbers in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so anyone may offer an emergency call-out. For an emergency call-out, two legal lines remain: gas work belongs to a Gas Safe registered engineer, and new fittings must meet your nation's water fittings rules.

Ask whether any part of the emergency call-out touches gas, and if it does, who on the team is on the Gas Safe Register.

No 14-day cancellation for an urgent call-out

Regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 takes urgent repairs you specifically asked the trader to visit for out of the usual 14-day cancellation right, so an emergency call-out cannot be cancelled once agreed. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if no price was fixed you only owe a reasonable one.

Agree the emergency call-out fee and hourly rate in a message before the plumber sets off. legislation.gov.uk →

Gas Safe Register for anything on gas

Plumbers need no register, but gas does: under the 1998 Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, and Northern Ireland's 2004 Regulations, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may be paid to work on a gas appliance or pipework. If the emergency reaches a gas boiler, hob or supply, that part is theirs.

Check the engineer's licence by text to 85080, or on 0800 408 5500, before the gas part of the emergency starts. gassaferegister.co.uk →

Public liability insurance, including water damage

No law requires a plumber to be insured for the emergency repair, but one leaking joint can ruin a ceiling. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you the right to the emergency repair done with reasonable care and skill — insurance is what makes a claim against the emergency plumber worth something.

Ask the emergency plumber for the insurer's name and whether the policy covers water damage.

VAT

An emergency plumbing call-out is standard-rated at 20% at any hour, and the night rate attracts it too. A trader whose taxable turnover passes £90,000 must register, charge it and show it as a separate line; one below that threshold adds none.

Ask on the phone whether the emergency rate includes VAT, and for the VAT number before the plumber arrives. gov.uk →

“What is your emergency call-out fee, and what does it cover?”

A good answer: A figure and a time — often the first hour on site — in a message before they set off.

“What is the rate after the first hour?”

A good answer: A stated hourly rate, and whether it rises after midnight or on a bank holiday.

“How soon can you be here?”

A good answer: A realistic time. An emergency plumber who says 'twenty minutes' from across the city is guessing.

“Will you make it safe first and quote the full repair after?”

A good answer: Yes. Isolating the leak is the emergency; a full repair can be priced calmly.

“Are parts charged on top of the emergency rate?”

A good answer: Yes, at a stated price, agreed before fitting.

“Is this anything to do with the boiler's gas side?”

A good answer: A plain answer. If it is, they say so and a Gas Safe engineer takes it.

Getting the quote right

  • The emergency call-out fee and what time it covers
  • The hourly rate after that, with night and bank holiday rates
  • Parts priced before fitting
  • A temporary fix and the permanent repair priced separately
  • Who actually attends the emergency — the plumber on the phone or a subcontractor sent out by the firm
  • The VAT number, with VAT at 20% shown on its own line

Walk away if

  • Refuses to give a call-out price until they arrive
  • A price that doubles once the water is off
  • Pressure to replace the whole system in the middle of the night
  • Takes on gas work without a Gas Safe card
  • Wants cash before starting

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the invoice and photosYour insurer will ask for the cause of the leak and what was paid.
Check the repair the next morningLook for drips, damp patches and pressure on the boiler gauge.
Book the permanent fixIf a temporary repair was made, get the full job priced calmly.
Review it honestlyYour review of the emergency call-out is tied to a real booking. Under four stars, you can send the problem with the emergency call-out to the emergency plumber first and we follow it up; then the review goes live.

STEP 1Complain to the emergency plumber firstContact the emergency plumber first, in writing, and keep a copy. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the emergency call-out must be done with reasonable care and skill; you can ask for the faulty part to be done again free of charge, and if that fails, for some or all of the money back.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right stepA score under four stars opens the make-it-right step: you choose whether the emergency plumber gets the chance to put the emergency call-out right first, and we chase it to an end before you publish.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplinesAn emergency plumber who will not engage can be reported through the consumer helplines, which pass cases to Trading Standards — Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060), Consumerline (0300 123 6262) in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claims, if money is owedIf money is still in dispute over the emergency call-out, the small claims routes need no solicitor: up to £10,000 in England and Wales on the small claims track, £5,000 in Scotland under simple procedure, and £5,000 in Northern Ireland's small claims court.

Hiring an emergency plumber: questions people ask

No — an emergency call-out is ordinary plumbing, with no register behind it. Gas work is restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers.

Not under the usual 14-day rule: the Consumer Contracts Regulations exclude urgent repairs you asked a trader to come out for. Agree the price in writing before they set off.

Many policies have an emergency helpline or cover escape of water; check yours before paying.

£80–£400 per job, about £200 typical, with nights and bank holidays at the top. For what moves the figure, see the emergency plumber price guide, and search your town above to find plumbers nearby.

That is not a plumbing job. Leave it to a Gas Safe registered engineer, who is the only person allowed to work on gas.

Turn off the stopcock, switch off electrics near the leak, move valuables and take photos.
