BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register applies to drainage contractors in any UK nation, so anyone may offer drain unblocking. The checks that matter are whose drain it is, the contractor's insurance and a written record of what was found.

Ask for the business name, the insurer and a written report or invoice for the drain unblocking.

Whose drain it is

In England, council guidance explains that from 1 October 2011 sewer pipes outside property boundaries, and pipes shared with a neighbour, passed to the sewerage company; you remain responsible for pipes that serve only your home and sit inside your boundary. That can decide who pays for the drain unblocking.

Before paying for the drain unblocking, ask the contractor whether the fault is in a drain serving only you, or a shared or public one. hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk →

Urgent call-outs and cancellation

An urgent call-out you asked for to clear a blocked drain is excluded from the 14-day cancellation right by regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; a booked, non-urgent visit agreed by phone or online normally keeps it.

VAT

Unblocking a drain is standard-rated at 20%, including jetting and any camera check afterwards. Over the £90,000 registration threshold a trader must charge it and show it separately; under it there is no VAT and no VAT number.

Ask whether the fixed drain unblocking price is with VAT or plus VAT, and for the VAT number. gov.uk →

“Is the drain unblocking a fixed price or by the hour?”

A good answer: A stated basis, before the van arrives.

“What does an evening or weekend drain call-out cost?”

A good answer: A stated uplift.

“Is the blocked drain section mine or shared?”

A good answer: Their view, and advice to call the sewerage company if it is shared or public.

“Will you clear the drain with rods or jetting?”

A good answer: Rods for a simple blockage; jetting for grease and roots.

“Will you check the drain flow afterwards?”

A good answer: Yes, by running water through.

“Do you recommend a camera survey?”

A good answer: Only if the blockage keeps returning or there are signs of damage.

Getting the quote right

  • Fixed price or hourly rate
  • Out-of-hours rate
  • Jetting priced if needed
  • Camera survey priced separately
  • Who actually attends with the rods or jetter — an employed engineer or a subcontractor
  • The VAT number, and VAT at 20% listed separately from the fixed price

Walk away if

  • Will not give a price before arriving
  • Insists on a camera survey for a one-off sink blockage
  • Pushes relining on the first visit
  • Does not ask whether the drain is shared
