BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No licence or register applies to drainage contractors in any UK nation, so anyone may offer drain unblocking. The checks that matter are whose drain it is, the contractor's insurance and a written record of what was found.
Ask for the business name, the insurer and a written report or invoice for the drain unblocking.
Whose drain it is
In England, council guidance explains that from 1 October 2011 sewer pipes outside property boundaries, and pipes shared with a neighbour, passed to the sewerage company; you remain responsible for pipes that serve only your home and sit inside your boundary. That can decide who pays for the drain unblocking.
Before paying for the drain unblocking, ask the contractor whether the fault is in a drain serving only you, or a shared or public one. hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk →
Urgent call-outs and cancellation
An urgent call-out you asked for to clear a blocked drain is excluded from the 14-day cancellation right by regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; a booked, non-urgent visit agreed by phone or online normally keeps it.
Agree the price for the drain unblocking in a message before the visit. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
Unblocking a drain is standard-rated at 20%, including jetting and any camera check afterwards. Over the £90,000 registration threshold a trader must charge it and show it separately; under it there is no VAT and no VAT number.
Ask whether the fixed drain unblocking price is with VAT or plus VAT, and for the VAT number. gov.uk →

Hiring a drain unblocker: questions people ask
No. No register applies to drainage contractors.
In England, since 1 October 2011, shared drains and those outside your boundary are the sewerage company's responsibility.
An urgent call-out you asked for is excluded from the 14-day cancellation right. For a booked non-urgent visit agreed by phone or online, you normally have 14 days, but you pay for work done if you asked it to start straight away.
£80–£250 per job in normal hours, with £180 typical. The drain unblocking price guide explains the range; your town in the search box above shows drain unblockers who cover it.
When blockages keep coming back or there are signs of damage.
Under an hour for a simple blockage, one to two hours for jetting.
