Waste carrier registration
Every UK nation requires a business carrying waste to register — the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA in Scotland, DAERA in Northern Ireland. gov.uk's general binding rules add that the company you use to dispose of septic tank sludge must be a registered waste carrier.
Ask for the registration number and search it on the public register before the tank is emptied. environment.data.gov.uk →
Your duty of care
Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires you, as the householder in England or Wales, to take reasonable steps to pass waste only to an authorised person. In England a council can fine a householder who fails that duty.
Keep a photo of the carrier's registration and a receipt with their business details. legislation.gov.uk →
Desludging under the general binding rules
In England the Environment Agency's general binding rules say the sludge must be removed before it goes beyond the tank's maximum capacity — at least once a year, or as the manufacturer instructs. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.
Ask the septic tank emptier to note the date and the volume removed on the receipt. gov.uk →
Insurance and trader status
Your Consumer Rights Act 2015 right to a service done with reasonable care and skill is worth most against a trader who is insured; a tanker on a lawn or a broken lid is the usual claim.
Ask who insures the business before booking the septic tank empty.
VAT
Emptying a domestic septic tank or cesspool is zero-rated (0%); emptying an industrial tank is standard-rated. Once a business's taxable turnover goes over £90,000 it must be registered, and the VAT then goes on the quote as its own line.
Check the receipt for the empty shows 0% VAT, and ask for the VAT number of the firm. gov.uk →

Getting the quote right
- Price for the empty, by tank size
- Hose distance or access charges
- Waste carrier registration number
- Any inspection or jetting as extras

Walk away if
- No waste carrier registration number
- Cannot say where the waste goes
- A cash price far below anyone else's
- No receipt or business details
