Weeding cost in the UK
£15–£40 per hour. Typically £24.
Gardeners charge £15–£40 an hour for weeding in the UK, and £24 is a fair middle rate. How overgrown the beds are decides the hours more than their size, and rates climb in London and the South East, while a minimum call-out makes very short weeding visits dearer per hour.

What moves the price
- How overgrown the garden is — beds weeded regularly take minutes, while a neglected plot takes a full day of digging
- Type of weeds — deep-rooted docks, brambles and bindweed take far longer to dig out than annual seedlings
- Hand weeding or spraying — careful hand weeding around plants takes longer than treating a gravel path
- Minimum call-out — many gardeners charge a minimum visit, so a quick weeding job costs more per hour
- Green-waste removal — taking the weeds away rather than composting them on site adds to the bill
- London and the South East — gardeners there charge a higher hourly rate than in the North or Wales
Domestic and garden services prices in the UK are up 24% over five years (ONS Consumer Price Inflation, Domestic services and household services, to 2026 August). Five years ago a typical weeding would have cost about £30 — an estimate from today's guide price and that index, not a recorded price. Source: ONS MM23 D7E6 →

How to pay less
- Book regular weeding visits so the gardener never faces a full season of growth
- Mulch the beds after weeding to cut how often the weeds come back
- Compost the weeds on site rather than paying the gardener to take green waste away
Before you book
- Japanese knotweed is not ordinary weeding; it needs controlling and disposing of under strict waste rules
- Show the gardener which plants are wanted so self-seeded flowers are not weeded out by mistake
- Ask whether the weeding rate includes taking the green waste away or leaving it in your bin
- Agree whether weedkiller may be used in the garden, especially near ponds, vegetables, children or pets
Weeding cost: questions people ask
£15–£40 an hour, about £24 typical. An independent gardener in the North sits well below a London rate, and a one-off clear of a neglected plot runs to more hours.
Most gardens take one to five hours. A garden that is weeded every few weeks is quick; one left for a season can take a full day.
Not as normal weeding. Knotweed spreads from tiny root fragments, and the government treats its waste as controlled, so it needs a specialist treatment plan and proper disposal.
Usually. Short, regular visits stop weeds seeding and spreading, so each one takes less time than a big one-off clear.
Lawn weed-and-feed treatments, knotweed control, mulching and new planting are priced as separate jobs.
