What moves the price

  • Loft size — a terrace or flat-roofed bungalow loft needs far fewer rolls than a large detached house
  • Top-up or full install — adding a layer over existing insulation is cheaper than starting from bare joists
  • Insulation type — mineral wool rolls are cheapest, while blown fibre and rigid boards cost more
  • Boarding for storage — raised loft boarding keeps the insulation at full depth but adds to the job
  • Access and clutter — a full loft or a tight hatch slows the installer down
  • Grant eligibility — households on certain benefits may get loft insulation funded through ECO4

How to pay less

  • Check ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme before paying, as loft insulation may be funded
  • Clear the loft before the installer arrives so the paid time goes on insulation
  • Have loft insulation laid at the same time as any loft boarding or roof work, so the installer visits once

Before you book

  • Ask the loft installer to keep eaves vents clear so the roof space stays ventilated
  • Ask for the cold water tanks and pipes in the loft to be insulated once the floor is covered
  • Do not cover old wiring or downlighters with insulation without an electrician checking them
  • If the loft insulation is grant-funded, ask for the work to be lodged with TrustMark

£300–£1,500 per job, about £950 typical. A top-up in a small loft costs least; a large loft with boarding over the insulation costs most.

Most lofts are insulated in half a day to a day. Raised boarding adds another day or so.

Possibly. ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme, run through energy suppliers, fund insulation for eligible households, so check before booking.

About 270mm of mineral wool is the usual recommendation. Many older lofts have far less and benefit from a top-up.

Clearing the loft, raised boarding, a new loft ladder and any electrical work are usually extra.
