BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register applies to loft insulation installers in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and gov.uk lists insulating roof spaces among the work that needs no building regulations approval in England.

Check insurance and a written specification of the loft insulation instead. gov.uk →

TrustMark

TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality Scheme for work in and around the home; it is voluntary and registration is per trade.

Search the business on TrustMark for loft insulation. trustmark.org.uk →

Insurance and trader status

Ask who insures the trader doing the loft insulation and for how much; public liability is standard. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers the loft insulation when the provider is a trader, and a contract made off-premises or online can usually be cancelled within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 — less what was done if you asked for an early start, and not at all for goods made to your specification.

See the insurance certificate before you confirm the loft insulation; the Locufy profile shows the trader and ID-checked badges.

VAT

Installing loft insulation in a home is zero-rated (0%) until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027; the same material bought without installation, or fitted in a hotel or other commercial building, is standard-rated, and an installer over the £90,000 threshold must still register and show the VAT, at 0%, as its own line.

Ask for the VAT number and check the loft quote shows 0% on the installed insulation and that nothing on it is charged at the standard rate. gov.uk →

“What depth of loft insulation will you install?”

A good answer: A stated depth or performance, written on the quote, with the existing depth noted.

“How will you keep the eaves ventilated?”

A good answer: Eaves trays or spacers so the loft insulation does not block airflow.

“Can I still store things in the loft?”

A good answer: Yes, on boarding raised above the insulation so it is not squashed.

“What about the cold water tank and pipes?”

A good answer: Lagged, and the area under the tank left uninsulated so warmth keeps it from freezing.

“Will the loft hatch be insulated and draught-stripped?”

A good answer: Yes, as part of the loft insulation job.

“Will the 0% VAT rate apply?”

A good answer: Yes, on loft insulation installed in a home until 31 March 2027.

Getting the quote right

  • Loft area and the depth of insulation
  • Material named — rolls or blown fibre
  • Boarding on raised supports if included
  • Tank, pipes and hatch lagging
  • Who actually attends — the installers laying the insulation, employed or subcontracted — and the business's VAT number, with VAT at 0% on the installation shown as its own line

Walk away if

  • Stuffs insulation into the eaves
  • Squashes it under boarding laid straight on the joists
  • Adds standard-rate VAT to insulation laid in your loft
  • Leaves cables buried with no thought for them
  • Cold-call grant offers with no scheme named

Schemes change. The amounts above were checked on the dates shown; the official page is the one that counts.

STEP 1Put it to the installer in writingDescribe the fault with the loft insulation, with photos, and say what would put it right. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects a trader to use reasonable care and skill; where that fell short you may require the work to be done again, or a lower price.
STEP 2Use Locufy's make-it-right stepRate the loft insulation under four stars and you are asked whether to send it to the provider first; we follow it through. Then the review goes up.
STEP 3Certification or grant problemsIf the loft insulation was MCS certified and is faulty, MCS takes complaints about its certified installers; grant problems go to Ofgem, which runs the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. For a dispute about the loft insulation with the trader, Trading Standards is reached through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, or Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Money still in disputeIf the loft insulation is still not settled, you can claim without a solicitor: the small claims track takes claims up to £10,000 in England and Wales, simple procedure up to £5,000 in Scotland, and the small claims court up to £5,000 in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a loft insulation installer: questions people ask

gov.uk lists insulating roof spaces among the work that needs no approval in England.

No licence or register applies; check insurance, the specification and TrustMark.

£300–£1,500 a job, typically around £950. Topping up a small loft is cheapest; large lofts, blown fibre and boarding cost more. How the figure is built up is in the Loft Insulation price guide; search by postcode above to see what loft insulation installers near you quote.

Installed in a home, it is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%.

In Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland grant if the EPC or a report recommends it; in Wales, Nest for eligible households.

On raised supports, so the insulation keeps its depth.
