What moves the price

  • Laminate grade — thicker boards with a higher AC wear rating cost more but last longer in busy rooms
  • Sheet vinyl or LVT — sheet vinyl is cheapest, while luxury vinyl tile and plank cost more per square metre
  • Glue-down or click — glue-down vinyl needs a perfectly smooth subfloor and more fitting time
  • Subfloor levelling — uneven boards or concrete need ply or levelling compound before the flooring
  • Underlay — acoustic or moisture-resistant underlay adds to the laminate price
  • Room shape — kitchens, bathrooms and hallways have more cuts around units, pipes and doorways

How to pay less

  • Choose click laminate or click LVT, which is quicker to fit than glue-down vinyl flooring
  • Run one flooring type through several rooms to cut down on thresholds and offcut waste
  • Lift old carpet and clear the room yourself before the laminate fitter arrives

Before you book

  • In a leasehold flat, check whether the lease requires acoustic underlay under laminate or vinyl
  • Use waterproof vinyl rather than laminate in bathrooms and other wet rooms
  • Ask whether the laminate or vinyl price includes underlay, trims and door trimming
  • Let laminate acclimatise in the room for a day or two before it is fitted

Laminate & Vinyl Flooring cost: questions people ask

£17–£60 per m², about £30 typical. Budget laminate or sheet vinyl costs least; premium glue-down LVT costs the most.

Half a day to a day for an average room. Glue-down LVT and floors needing levelling take longer.

Laminate is cheaper and hard-wearing in dry rooms. LVT is waterproof and warmer underfoot, so it suits kitchens and bathrooms.

Often, if the existing floor is flat, sound and not carpet. Carpet must come up, and uneven floors need levelling first.

Moving furniture, removing plinths, trimming doors and taking the old flooring away are commonly extra.
