How to pay less

  • Book routine gas work on weekdays rather than paying evening or weekend gas engineer rates
  • Group several gas jobs, such as a boiler service and hob check, into one visit
  • Clear access to the boiler, meter and appliances before the gas engineer arrives, so the paid time goes on the work

Before you book

  • It is illegal for anyone not on the Gas Safe Register to work on gas — check the engineer's ID card
  • Check the engineer's card lists the type of gas work you need, such as boilers or cookers
  • If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency number before calling an engineer
  • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm near gas appliances
