- Call-out fee — many plumbers charge a call-out that covers the first hour of work
- Time of day — evening, weekend and emergency plumbing rates are far higher
- Experience and qualifications — gas and heating qualifications command higher plumber rates

How to pay less
- Save up small plumbing jobs and book them in one visit to make the most of the call-out
- Ask for a fixed price for a defined plumbing job rather than an open hourly rate
- Book in working hours unless it is a genuine emergency
Before you book
- You can ask the plumber to confirm the plumbing work meets the regulations on water fittings
- For any work on gas appliances, check the plumber is on the Gas Safe Register
- Ask whether the hourly rate includes a call-out and how parts are charged
- Know where your stopcock is so the plumber can isolate the water quickly
