What moves the price
- Number of radiators — every extra radiator adds pipework, valves and fitting time to the central heating
- New boiler or existing — including a new combi or system boiler adds thousands to the system
- No existing system — retrofitting central heating means lifting floors and running every pipe from scratch
- Size of the home — a flat needs far less pipe and fewer radiators than a detached house
- Controls — smart thermostats, zoning and TRVs add to the cost but cut running costs
- Making good — lifting carpets and boards and redecorating after the work can add up

How to pay less
- Keep existing central heating pipework where it is sound and only replace radiators and the boiler
- Fit the system while floors are already up for other work, such as rewiring or new flooring
- Choose standard-size radiators, which cost less than designer or column radiators
Before you book
- Gas work on the central heating needs a Gas Safe registered engineer, who notifies building control when it is done
- Ask for a room-by-room heat loss calculation so radiators are sized to keep each room warm
- Check whether a heat pump would suit the home, as grants may cover part of it
- Plan where pipes will run so the central heating installer can avoid lifting finished floors
Central Heating Installation cost: questions people ask
£3,000–£9,000 per system, about £4,500 typical. A small flat costs least; a large house needing a new boiler and pipes run from scratch costs the most.
Four to eight days for most homes. Homes with no existing system take longer because every pipe must be run.
Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may connect the gas boiler, and the installation must be registered with building control.
It depends on the home's insulation and your budget. A heat pump with suitable radiators can cost more upfront but may qualify for grant funding.
Redecorating, refitting floor coverings and electrical work for controls are often separate.
