What moves the price
- Board material — softwood decking is cheapest, hardwood and composite boards cost far more per m²
- Height off the ground — a raised deck needs a stronger frame, posts, a balustrade and often steps
- Groundwork — a sloping garden or soft ground needs more footings before the decking frame goes in
- Size and shape — small decks and decks built round trees or corners cost more per m²
- Extras — lighting, built-in seating and screening are priced on top of the decking boards
- Region — decking builders in London and the South East charge the highest rates

How to pay less
- Keep the decking close to the ground so it needs no balustrade and the frame stays simple
- Choose a rectangular decking layout that uses whole board lengths with little cutting waste
- Treat a softwood deck every year so the boards last and the decking does not need replacing early
Before you book
- Check planning rules if the decking will sit more than 30cm above the ground
- Ask whether the decking quote covers taking away the old deck and any spoil
- Agree board direction, fixings and the finish before the builder orders materials
- Think about where the deck meets the house so it stays below the damp-proof course
Decking Construction cost: questions people ask
£80–£220 per m², with around £140 typical. A ground-level softwood deck costs least; a raised composite deck with balustrades costs most.
Two to four days for most gardens. A raised deck, a big area or a sloping site can take a week.
Usually not. It counts as permitted development if it sits no more than 30cm above the ground and, added to any sheds or extensions, takes up under half the plot. Higher decks and listed buildings need permission.
It costs more at the start but needs no yearly staining and lasts longer than softwood, so it can work out cheaper over the life of the deck.
Patios, pergolas, outdoor electrics and taking away an old deck are normally priced on their own.
