Carpet Fitter cost in the UK
£3–£6 per m². Typically £4.
A carpet fitter's labour in the UK runs £3–£6 per m², about £4 typical, on top of the carpet itself. Stairs, awkward rooms, lifting old flooring and a fitter's minimum charge push the labour up; buying carpet supplied and fitted costs far more, because the carpet is most of that bill.

What moves the price
- Fitting only or supplied and fitted — the fitter's labour is a small part of the bill once the carpet itself is included
- Underlay — a thicker foam or rubber underlay adds to every square metre the carpet fitter lays
- Stairs and landings — each step is cut and fitted by hand, so stairs cost more per metre than a bedroom
- Room shape — bay windows, alcoves and doorways create more cuts and waste on the roll
- Lifting old flooring — taking up and disposing of old carpet or gripper is often charged by the room
- Minimum charge — a carpet fitter's call-out minimum makes a single small room dearer per square metre
Building and repair prices in the UK are up 6% over five years (ONS Consumer Price Inflation, Services for maintenance and repair, to 2026 August). Five years ago a typical carpet fitter would have cost about £14 — an estimate from today's guide price and that index, not a recorded price. Source: ONS MM23 D7DO →

How to pay less
- Buy a mid-range underlay with your carpet and let the fitter lay both on the same visit
- Have the whole house fitted with carpet in one visit so you pay the fitter's minimum charge only once
- Clear the rooms and lift the old carpet yourself if the fitter will take that off the price
Before you book
- Measure the rooms yourself first so you can sense-check the carpet fitter's quantities and waste
- Ask whether the carpet fitter's price per square metre covers underlay, gripper and door bars, or the labour only
- Check doors will clear the new carpet and underlay, as trimming them is not always part of the fitting
- In a leasehold flat, check the lease, as some forbid carpet removal or ask for acoustic underlay
Carpet Fitter cost: questions people ask
£3–£6 per m² for the fitting labour, about £4 typical. A simple, empty room costs least per square metre; stairs, small rooms and London jobs cost most, and most fitters set a minimum charge.
One or two rooms take about half a day. A staircase, landing and several bedrooms usually fill a full day.
Many will, often for a charge per room, because carpet has to go to a licensed waste site. Ask before the day so the fitter can bring the van space.
Sometimes. The fitter's labour is a small share of a supplied-and-fitted price, but a fitter may charge a minimum and will not guarantee carpet they did not supply.
Moving furniture, levelling floorboards, trimming doors and disposing of old flooring are often charged on top.
They are Locufy guide prices for the UK, taken from published UK figures for carpet fitting labour — a national range, not a quote. The carpet, underlay and gripper are bought on top.
