What moves the price
- State of the plot — a neglected allotment under brambles and couch grass takes far longer than a tidy one
- Hand tools or powered kit — a helper bringing a rotavator or strimmer charges more per hour
- Green waste — many allotment sites ban bonfires, so hauling rubbish off the plot adds to the bill
- Where the plot is — gardeners in London and the South East charge well above rates in the North
- Regular or one-off help — a booked weekly slot usually costs less an hour than a single rescue visit
- Season — spring digging and planting is when allotment helpers are busiest and least flexible

How to pay less
- Book allotment help for a regular hour or two rather than waiting for the plot to become overgrown
- Do the light weeding yourself and keep the paid hours for heavy digging and clearing
- Compost the green waste on the plot where site rules allow, so nothing has to be hauled away
Before you book
- Check your allotment tenancy rules on helpers, bonfires and powered tools before anyone starts work
- Tell the helper where the water, the shed key and the site gate code can be found
- Mark any perennial plants, fruit bushes and buried pipes on the plot so they are not dug up
- Agree what happens to the green waste and whether the hourly rate covers taking it away
Allotment Help cost: questions people ask
£14–£45 an hour, with £25 a fair middle figure. Routine weeding outside the big cities costs least, while a London helper bringing a rotavator and clearing waste costs most.
A routine visit is two to four hours. A plot left for a season or two can take several days, usually spread over a few weeks so the ground can be dug and weeded in stages.
Usually, yes, but the tenancy agreement is with you and the site rules still apply. Councils run most allotments and keep the waiting lists, so check their rules on helpers before you hand over the gate code.
Many will, and booking both on the same day can save a second travel charge. Ask for one hourly rate across the two.
Seeds, plants, compost, new raised beds and skip hire for a big clearance are paid for separately.
They are Locufy guide prices for the UK, worked out from published gardener rates — a national range rather than a quote. The rate you pay rests on the plot's state and the region.
