BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
GDC register
Tooth whitening is practising dentistry under the Dentists Act 1984. A GDC-registered dentist may provide it, or a dental hygienist, therapist or clinical dental technician on the register who works to a dentist's prescription; anyone else commits a criminal offence, and the GDC prosecutes.
Search the teeth whitening dentist's name on the GDC register before you book. olr.gdc-uk.org →
Insurance is no substitute for registration
The GDC says unregistered tooth whitening cannot be insured, because you cannot insure against committing a crime; any such policy is void. A beautician's insurance certificate does not make teeth whitening legal.
Ignore insurance claims from anyone not on the GDC register, and check the register instead. gdc-uk.org →
Self-applied kits from a non-dentist (Dentists Act 1984)
Handing you trays and telling you how to apply whitening gel can count as giving dental advice or attendance under the Dentists Act 1984, and the GDC has prosecuted people for it. "You apply it yourself" does not make it legal.
If someone not on the register offers you a kit to use in their salon, walk away and report it to the GDC. gdc-uk.org →
Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015
Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply when teeth whitening dentists trade as a business: the teeth whitening must be done with reasonable care and skill, and if it is not, you can ask for a repeat or a lower price.
See whether the profile carries the trader badge before you pay, and screenshot what was agreed. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
Teeth whitening for appearance is standard-rated at 20%, even from a dentist, because it is cosmetic; only dental care given as treatment is exempt. A practice whose taxable sales pass £90,000 must register and charge VAT on the whitening, shown as its own line.
Ask the practice for its VAT number and check the whitening carries VAT at 20%. gov.uk →

A good answer: Yes — the dentist checks teeth and gums and treats problems first.
A good answer: An option chosen for your teeth, with the price of each.
A good answer: An honest no, and what it means for matching them after the teeth whitening.
A good answer: A clear answer and, if needed, a desensitising product.
A good answer: A price per syringe for later teeth whitening top-ups.
A good answer: Stop, call the practice and come in to be checked.

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a teeth whitening dentist: questions people ask
No. Tooth whitening is dentistry under the Dentists Act 1984, legal only from a GDC-registered dentist or a hygienist, therapist or clinical dental technician on the register who works to a dentist's prescription.
Search their name on the GDC register online. If they do not appear, they cannot legally provide tooth whitening.
£200–£550 per treatment, typically around £350. In-chair whitening, combined plans and London practices cost more. Our teeth whitening price guide breaks the figure down; to see what teeth whitening dentists near you charge, search your town above.
No. The GDC says you cannot be insured against a criminal offence, so such a policy is void.
Not usually: purely cosmetic work is standard-rated at 20%, while dental care for health reasons can be exempt.
Stop, see the dentist and tell them in writing. Treatment not done with reasonable care and skill can be put right or the price reduced; the GDC hears concerns about registrants.
