THE 60-SECOND VERSION

Hiring a sump pump installer in five steps

  1. Plan the dischargeWhere the pumped water goes — a drain, not a neighbour's garden.
  2. Who wires it?A dedicated supply by a registered electrician.
  3. Think about power cutsA battery backup or alarm keeps the cellar dry when the power goes.
  4. Existing pit or new?Cutting a new sump through a concrete floor is the bigger job.
  5. Test with waterThe pump run with water before the installer leaves.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register applies to sump pump installers in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so the checks fall on the wiring, the discharge route and insurance.

Ask for the business name, the insurer and a written scope for the sump pump installation.

Electrical work and the Building Regulations

If the sump pump needs a new electrical supply, that is electrical work under the Building Regulations in England and Wales. Work in a bathroom or shower room is notifiable, and so in Wales is work in a kitchen or outdoors: it needs an electrician on a competent person scheme, or building control.

Search the electrician on the Registered Competent Person Electrical register and ask for the certificate for the sump pump wiring. electricalcompetentperson.co.uk →

Public liability insurance, including water damage

No law requires a plumber to be insured for the sump pump installation, but one leaking joint can ruin a ceiling. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you the right to the sump pump installation done with reasonable care and skill — insurance is what makes a claim against the installer worth something.

Ask the installer for the insurer's name and whether the policy covers water damage.

Asbestos in old floors

Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 some asbestos removal needs an HSE-licensed contractor. Cutting into an old cellar floor or lining where asbestos might be present should be planned first.

In an older building, ask how the installer will check the floor before cutting the sump pit. hse.gov.uk →

VAT

Installing a sump pump is standard-rated at 20%, the pit, the pipework and the alarm included. A trader whose taxable turnover passes £90,000 must register, charge it and show it as a separate line; one below that threshold adds none.

Ask the sump pump installer for the VAT number and whether the price includes VAT. gov.uk →

A good answer: Offered and priced.

“Will you cut a new sump pit or use the existing one?”

A good answer: A clear plan after looking.

“How will you test it?”

A good answer: By filling the pit with water and watching the pump cycle.

“What servicing does the pump need?”

A good answer: An interval and a price.
