BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
You will not find hedge cutters on any statutory register, because none exists in the four nations, and no licence is needed to trade. The checks are what you can see: their kit, how they work at height, and the two legal rules on nests and waste.
Ask for a name and invoice, and photos of hedges they have cut.
Nesting birds
Wild birds' nests in use or being built are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and in Northern Ireland by the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. A hedge cutter who finds one in a dense garden hedge has to stop and come back later.
Book outside the nesting months where you can, and ask how the hedge cutter checks for nests. legislation.gov.uk →
Waste carrier registration
A hedge cutter who drives away the hedge trimmings is transporting waste as a business, which needs registration: with the Environment Agency in England, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA in Scotland or the NIEA in Northern Ireland.
Ask for the carrier number and search it on the public register before anything leaves. environment.data.gov.uk →
Working at height
The Work at Height Regulations 2005, enforced by HSE, say anyone who employs or controls work at height must plan and supervise it and use competent people with the right equipment. A tall hedge is work at height.
Ask how they will reach the top and what they stand on. hse.gov.uk →
VAT
Hedge trimming is standard-rated at 20%, but only a VAT-registered trader adds it. A hedge cutter working alone below the £90,000 turnover threshold charges no VAT and has no VAT number to give.
Ask whether the hedge cutter is VAT-registered; if not, no VAT is added to the hourly rate. gov.uk →
A good answer: Yes — and if there is one in use, they cut round it or come back. That is the law, not an optional extra.
A good answer: A platform, a stable ladder with someone footing it, or long-reach trimmers from the ground.
A good answer: Bagged for your bin, composted, or carried under a waste carrier number you can check.
A good answer: Only with the neighbour's agreement; a good hedge cutter asks.
A good answer: An estimate in hours for its length and height, so the hourly rate means something.
A good answer: Advice on what the hedge species will take — beech, privet and laurel react differently.
A good answer: Clippings raked from beds and lawn, paths swept, nothing left in the gutter.
Booking by the hour
- The rate per hour, and whether an evening or Saturday cut is charged higher
- The minimum visit, and what is charged if the hedge is finished inside it
- Who brings the trimmer, ladders or platform, and who takes the trimmings
- Which faces and the top, and to what height, agreed before the first hour
- ID checked and the rating on earlier hedge jobs
- Public liability insurance, since a trimmer near glass, cars or a neighbour's fence can do damage
Walk away if
- They are happy to cut through a nest
- No carrier number but they will take the trimmings
- A tall hedge from an unfooted ladder
- A door-knock offering to do the hedge today for cash
What a hedge cutter costs: £20–£50 per hour
Hedge cutting is usually charged by the hour with a minimum visit; the length and height of the hedge, how it is reached and whether the trimmings leave set the total. Hedge Trimming price guide →

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a hedge cutter: questions people ask
No. Working as a hedge cutter needs no licence or registration in any part of the UK. Nesting birds are protected, and taking trimmings away needs a waste carrier registration.
Cutting is not, but damaging or destroying an active nest is an offence. Check the hedge first, or wait until late summer.
£20–£50 an hour is the usual range and £30 the typical figure. The hedge trimming price guide has the factors behind it.
Most garden hedges need one or two cuts a year; fast growers such as privet may need more.
Not if the hedge cutter can reach every face and the waste plan is agreed. Leave side gates open, cars moved and pets indoors.
Most do. Agree in advance if they will use yours.
