BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
Working as a lawn mowing contractor needs no licence or registration in any part of the UK. The checks are insurance, what a visit includes, and the clippings.
Ask for a name and invoice, and how many lawns they cut a week.
Waste carrier registration
If the lawn mowing contractor loads the grass clippings into their van, they are carrying waste for a business and must be on the register kept by the Environment Agency (England), Natural Resources Wales, SEPA (Scotland) or the NIEA (Northern Ireland).
Check the number on the public register for your nation, and that the name matches. environment.data.gov.uk →
Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance is voluntary for a lawn mowing contractor, and it is the cover that pays out when a rotary mower can throw a stone through a window or into a parked car.
Get the insurer and limit in writing when you agree the rate per hour.
Trader status
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you the right to work done with reasonable care and skill from a trader, and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give 14 days to cancel a service agreed at home or online.
Ask for a business name and a written price per visit.
VAT
Lawn mowing carries VAT at the standard 20% only when the person mowing is registered. Someone mowing on their own with takings under £90,000 a year need not register, does not charge VAT and has no VAT number to give.
Ask whether they are VAT-registered when you agree the mowing round; if they are not, the rate per hour is the whole price. gov.uk →
