Handyman cost in the UK
£30–£65 per hour. Typically £33.
A handyman in the UK charges £30–£65 an hour, with about £33 the usual rate. Most of the gap is location: London and the South East sit well above the rest of the country, and the minimum first-hour charge decides what a small job really costs.

What moves the price
- Where you live — a London handyman charges well above what the same work costs in the North
- The minimum charge — most handymen bill a full first hour, so a ten-minute fix still costs an hour
- How many jobs you batch — one visit with a list of repairs spreads the travel over several tasks
- Materials and parts — the hourly rate usually covers labour only, with fixings and parts added at cost
- Wall and house type — Victorian lath and plaster or solid brick slows drilling and fixing compared with a new-build
- VAT — a handyman firm over the VAT threshold adds 20%, while most sole traders charge none

How to pay less
- Write a full list of handyman jobs and book one longer visit instead of several call-outs
- Buy the shelves, poles or parts yourself in advance so paid time goes on the repairs
- Ask for a half-day or full-day handyman rate, which usually works out below the price per hour
Before you book
- A handyman cannot touch gas appliances — that work needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
- New circuits or a consumer unit change are notifiable electrical work under Part P, not a handyman job
- Ask the handyman whether they carry public liability insurance before any drilling or repairs begin
- Agree whether the handyman's hourly rate includes travel and how materials will be charged
Handyman cost: questions people ask
£30–£65 an hour, and £33 is the usual figure. Outside the big cities expect the lower rates; central London pushes towards the upper figure.
A single repair is normally done inside the first hour. A list of six or eight jobs is better booked as a half or full day.
Only minor jobs. Swapping a light fitting like for like is often fine, but new circuits are notifiable under Part P and must be done or signed off by a registered electrician, and any gas work needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Usually. Day and half-day rates come in below the hourly figure, and they remove the first-hour minimum from each extra task.
Gas, larger electrical and plumbing jobs, plastering whole walls and anything structural are trade jobs with their own prices.
