What moves the price
- Weight of the mirror — a heavy overmantel mirror needs heavy-duty fixings and often two people to lift
- Wall type — plasterboard, lath and plaster and solid brick each need different fixings and drilling time
- Number of pictures — a gallery wall of a dozen frames takes far longer to plan and level than one print
- Hanging system — picture rails and track systems in period homes are quicker than drilling every frame
- Where you live — picture hanging in London costs noticeably more an hour than in Scotland or the North
- Minimum booking — most hangers bill at least an hour, so one picture alone costs the same as several

How to pay less
- Gather every picture and mirror you want hung so the whole job fits one booking
- Mark the rough position of each frame on the wall with tape before the hanger arrives
- Use an existing picture rail where you have one, which saves drilling and filling holes
Before you book
- Weigh any large mirror or tell the hanger its size so they bring fixings that can carry it
- Point out where pipes and cables run in the walls so the picture hanging avoids them
- Say whether the walls are plasterboard, brick or old plaster if you know, as it changes the fixings
- Ask whether the hanger has public liability insurance in case a mirror or wall is damaged
