What moves the price
- Cause of the damp — rising, penetrating and condensation damp each need a different damp proofing treatment
- Length of wall treated — a chemical damp proof course is priced by the metre of wall injected
- Replastering — salt-damaged plaster is stripped and replaced, often costing more than the damp proofing injection itself
- Independent damp survey — a survey with no product to sell costs extra but avoids paying for the wrong fix
- Basement or cellar tanking — waterproofing below ground is a much larger damp job than a single wall
- Older solid-walled homes — period houses may need breathable lime fixes rather than modern damp proofing
Building and repair prices in the UK are up 6% over five years (ONS Consumer Price Inflation, Services for maintenance and repair, to 2026 August). Five years ago a typical damp proofing would have cost about £1890 — an estimate from today's guide price and that index, not a recorded price. Source: ONS MM23 D7DO →

How to pay less
- Pay for an independent damp survey first, so the damp proofing you buy treats the real cause
- Fix gutters, downpipes and pointing before paying for damp treatment, as these often cause the damp
- Ventilate and heat rooms steadily to cut condensation, which no damp proof course will cure
Before you book
- Ask whether the damp surveyor is independent or also sells the damp proofing treatment they recommend
- Check the damp proofing guarantee is insurance-backed so it still holds if the firm closes
- If you rent, damp and mould are usually the landlord's responsibility to put right
- In a listed building, ask the council before injecting a damp proof course or using cement plaster
Damp Proofing cost: questions people ask
£500–£4,000 per job, about £2,500 typical. A single wall treated and replastered costs least; a whole house with a new damp course and replastering costs most.
One to three days for most homes. New plaster then needs weeks to dry fully before you paint.
Most damp in UK homes is condensation or penetrating damp, not rising damp. A tide mark low on a ground-floor wall points to rising damp; mould on cold walls and windows points to condensation.
Usually the landlord, who must keep the home free from serious hazards such as damp and mould. Report it in writing.
Redecorating, new skirting boards and repairs to gutters, pointing or ground levels outside are normally separate.
