What moves the price

  • Open fire or stove — a wood burner or multi-fuel stove takes longer to sweep than an open fire
  • Lined or unlined flue — an unlined chimney behind a stove is the dearest single flue to sweep
  • Number of flues — a second flue on the same chimney sweep visit costs far less than the first
  • What you burn — wood and house coal leave more soot and tar than smokeless fuel, so need sweeping more often
  • London and the South East — chimney sweeps there charge more than in the rest of the UK
  • Autumn rush — chimney sweeps are busiest just before the heating season, so book early

How to pay less

  • Book the chimney sweep in spring or summer, outside the busy autumn rush before the heating season
  • Have every flue swept on one visit — a second flue costs far less than a separate chimney sweep call-out
  • Burn dry, Ready to Burn wood or smokeless fuel, which leaves less soot to sweep

Before you book

  • Many home insurers ask for a certificate of sweeping, so keep the one the chimney sweep gives you
  • Ask whether the chimney sweep is HETAS approved or a member of NACS, the Guild or APICS
  • In a smoke control area, burn only authorised fuels unless your stove is an exempt appliance
  • Let the fire or stove go out and cool the night before so the chimney can be swept safely

Chimney Sweep cost: questions people ask

£60–£150 per visit, about £105 on average. One open-fire flue is the cheapest sweep; an unlined flue behind a stove, especially in London, is the dearest.

About an hour per flue, including the smoke draw test and the certificate. Each extra flue adds roughly the same again.

At least once a year on smokeless fuel. Wood and house coal leave more soot and tar, so HETAS recommends sweeping twice a year for those, and a stove used every day may need it more often still.

Often, yes. Many home insurance policies ask for proof that the chimney has been swept by a registered sweep, which a DIY sweep cannot provide.

Repairs to the chimney, new flue liners, cowls and bird guards are priced separately from the sweep.
