What moves the price

  • Weekly or fortnightly — a weekly domestic cleaner keeps the home ticking over and often charges less per hour
  • Agency or independent — the agency rate carries insurance, background checks and cover when your regular cleaner is away
  • Region — domestic cleaning rates in London and the South East sit well above those in the Midlands and the North
  • Hours per visit — most cleaners set a minimum of two or three hours, so a short clean costs the same as a longer one
  • Your home's layout — stairs, a second bathroom and a busy kitchen all add time to every regular clean
  • Extras on the list — ironing, changing beds and inside the fridge add hours to each domestic visit

How to pay less

  • Agree a weekly clean rather than fortnightly — the domestic work stays lighter and the hourly rate is usually lower
  • Supply your own cleaning products and equipment and ask the cleaner to take that off the hourly rate
  • Pick the rooms that matter most for each clean and rotate the rest so the visit stays short

Before you book

  • A domestic cleaner you hire directly who is not self-employed may count as your employee, with the minimum wage and payroll to run
  • Ask whether the cleaner has public liability insurance before the first regular visit
  • Write down the jobs you want done each clean so a new cleaner works to the same list
  • Decide how keys or door codes are handled, and ask about a DBS check for anyone cleaning while you are out

Regular Domestic Cleaning cost: questions people ask

£13–£25 an hour, about £16 outside London. A weekly independent cleaner is the cheapest option; an agency cleaner in London is the dearest.

Usually two to three hours. Most cleaners set a minimum visit length, so it pays to plan the jobs to fill it.

Per hour, often yes. A weekly visit keeps the home lighter work, and cleaners tend to give their best rate to the customers they see every week.

An agency handles insurance, background checks and cover for holidays and sickness. Paying an independent cleaner yourself is cheaper, but check whether they are self-employed or you could be their employer.

Deep cleaning, the inside of the oven and outside windows are not part of a regular visit and are priced on their own.
