BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

The law in all four UK nations is silent on threading therapists — no licence, no register, no required qualification. Licensing starts where the skin is pierced, which a facial threading does not do. If the salon is in a London borough, ask whether its Special Treatments Licence covers the facial threading.

Ask to see their training for this exact treatment, and confirm their insurance. gov.uk →

Insurance that covers the facial threading

Ask the threading therapist about insurance before the facial threading, not after: policies list the treatments they cover, and anything left off the schedule is not insured.

Get the insurer's name in writing and check the schedule mentions the facial threading.

Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers a facial threading bought from a threading therapist in business. Reasonable care and skill is the standard; below it, you can require the work again or a reduction.

Find the trader badge on the profile, and keep the confirmation with the price on it. legislation.gov.uk →

VAT

Threading of any facial area is standard-rated at 20% from a registered threading therapist or salon. A business over £90,000 of taxable turnover must charge VAT and show it on the receipt; a sole therapist below that normally charges none.

Ask whether the receipt carries a VAT number, and whether package prices already include it. gov.uk →

“Do you use a fresh thread for each client?”

A good answer: Yes, a new length cut in front of you by the threading therapist.

“What does a full-face threading package include?”

A good answer: The areas named and one price.

“Is my skin all right for threading today?”

A good answer: Questions about medication, sunburn and breakouts before starting.

“Will you avoid the spot on my chin?”

A good answer: Yes — threading around broken skin, not over it.

“How long until regrowth?”

A good answer: An honest interval for your hair.

“Do you have a quieter room?”

A good answer: A private space for facial threading if you prefer.

“What if my skin reacts?”

A good answer: Cooling gel, advice and a pause before the next threading.

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the receiptAreas and price.
Let the skin settleSkip make-up and heat for the rest of the day.
Watch for bumpsSpots or ingrown hairs that last: tell the threading therapist.
Leave the reviewYour review is tied to the booking, so it carries weight. If the facial threading is not right, use the make-it-right step first so the threading therapist can put it right before the review goes up.

STEP 1Tell the threading therapist, in writingSay what is wrong with the facial threading and whether you want it redone or money back. A trader owes you reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, so a facial threading that falls short can be put right or partly refunded.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyGive the facial threading under four stars and we ask whether to send it to the threading therapist first; we follow it through with them, and then you review.
STEP 3No regulator — Trading StandardsNo body licenses a threading therapist, so a facial threading dispute you cannot settle goes to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060) or Consumerline in Northern Ireland (0300 123 6262).
STEP 4Small claims, if it comes to moneyIf the threading therapist will not refund or redo the facial threading, you can claim without a solicitor: up to £10,000 on the small claims track in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under simple procedure in Scotland, and up to £5,000 in the small claims court in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a threading therapist: questions people ask

Outside London, no licence or register applies. A salon in a London borough may need the Special Treatments Licence, so ask.

The threading therapist has to put a poor facial threading right at their own cost, within a reasonable time, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015; where they cannot, part or all of the price comes back.

£4–£15 per area, typically around £10. The upper lip costs least; a full reshape or a full face package costs more. The threading price guide explains each factor, and a search above lists threading therapists working in your area.

Many people with sensitive skin choose it, but tell the threading therapist about medication or recent treatments first.

It depends on your hair; ask the therapist for an interval.

Tell the therapist in writing. Marks that come from threading not done with reasonable care and skill can be a reason for a price reduction.
