No register applies
The law in all four UK nations is silent on lash lift technicians — no licence, no register, no required qualification. Council skin-piercing licences begin only where a needle breaks the skin, which a lash lift technician does not do. In Greater London a borough's Special Treatments Licence covers listed treatments such as massage and manicures; ask whether the lash lift and tint falls inside it.
Ask to see their training for this exact treatment, and confirm their insurance. gov.uk →
Insurance that covers the lash lift and tint
The insurance norm for lash lift technicians is cover written for each treatment, so a lash lift technician whose schedule leaves out the lash lift and tint is not insured for it.
Ask the lash lift technician for the insurer's name and the schedule line that covers the lash lift and tint.
Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers a lash lift and tint bought from a lash lift technician in business. Reasonable care and skill is the standard; below it, you can require the work again or a reduction.
Find the trader badge on the profile, and keep the confirmation with the price on it. legislation.gov.uk →
Patch test before the treatment
No register or law sets a patch test, but it is one of the checks that matters in place of a register: a lash lift technician should test the product on your skin with enough time before the lash lift and tint for a reaction to show.
Ask the lash lift technician when the patch test is done and how long they wait before the lash lift and tint.
VAT
A lash lift, with or without tint, is a cosmetic treatment taxed at 20% by a registered salon. A lash lift technician's business over the £90,000 threshold must charge VAT on the lift and any keratin add-on, and list it apart on the receipt.
Ask for the VAT number and for VAT shown apart on the receipt. gov.uk →
A good answer: A test booked ahead, with a wait before treatment.
A good answer: A choice based on your lash length, explained by the lash lift technician.
A good answer: Eyes closed throughout, pads under the lashes and care at every step.
A good answer: Yes or no, with a figure.
A good answer: A realistic number of weeks.
A good answer: Dry for the time they advise, no steam, no mascara for a while.
A good answer: The technician stops, removes the product and flushes if needed.
Getting the quote right
- Lift and tint, or lift only
- Keratin or nourishing add-ons, if extra
- The patch test — free, charged or a separate visit
- Who actually attends: the lash lift technician who did the patch test, or another technician, and whether that person is employed or subcontracted
- The salon's VAT number, with VAT apart from the lift, the tint and the add-on
Walk away if
- No patch test for a first treatment
- Lotion left on far longer than the instructions say
- Working near your eye without pads or care
- A technician who dismisses stinging

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a lash lift technician: questions people ask
Only in Greater London, where the borough's Special Treatments Licence may cover the premises; elsewhere lash lift technicians need none. Ask a London salon to show its licence before you book a lash lift and tint.
A lash lift and tint that falls below reasonable care and skill breaches the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Ask the lash lift technician in writing for a free redo; if that is refused or fails, ask for a reduction.
£45–£85 per treatment, typically around £65. Premium salons, keratin add-ons and the therapist's experience add to it. What pushes it up or down is set out in the lash lift & tint price guide; search your town above to compare lash lift technicians.
Tell the technician first and have the patch test. A lash lift technician should stop at once if your eyes sting.
Take them out before the treatment; ask the technician when to put them back.
Tell the technician in writing within days. A lift not done with reasonable care and skill is a reason for a fix or a reduction.
