THE 60-SECOND VERSION
Hiring a stump grinding contractor in five steps
- Measure the stumpDiameter at ground level, and how many — the size sets how many hours the grinding takes.
- Agree the depthDeep enough for turf, a new tree or a patio — say which.
- Mark what is buriedDrains, water pipes, cables and gas lines near the stump.
- Check accessGate width matters: a narrow-access grinder fits a side path, a big one does not.
- Settle the chippingsLeft as mulch, backfilled, or taken by a registered waste carrier.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
There is no licensing scheme and no public register for stump grinding contractors in any of the four nations. The checks are insurance, care around buried services and the waste.
Ask how they locate pipes and cables before grinding.
Waste carrier registration
Taking the chippings and soil off your property makes the stump grinding contractor a waste carrier, and every nation requires carriers to register — the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA or the NIEA, depending on where you live.
Get the registration number in writing and look it up by number, name or postcode. environment.data.gov.uk →
Public liability insurance
Insurance is not a legal requirement for a stump grinding contractor. Public liability insurance matters anyway: a grinder throws chips and stones and can hit a pipe or cable.
Ask to see the current insurance certificate, with its limit.
Your duty of care for the chippings
In England and Wales section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires a householder to take reasonable steps to hand waste only to an authorised person; Scotland has its own duty.
Keep the stump grinding contractor's carrier number and receipt. legislation.gov.uk →
VAT
Stump grinding is standard-rated at 20% when the operator is VAT-registered. A stump grinding contractor working alone with turnover under £90,000 does not charge VAT and has no VAT number to give.
Ask whether the stump grinding contractor is VAT-registered; if so, the 20% should be shown on top of the hourly rate. gov.uk →
A good answer: A depth suited to what goes there next — turf, a new tree or paving.
A good answer: A machine width they can state, and a plan if it will not fit.
A good answer: They ask what you know, look for covers and markers, and grind carefully near a boundary or house.
A good answer: Left as mulch, used to backfill, or taken away under a carrier number.
A good answer: Added to the list if wanted, with the extra time; roots spread wider than the stump.
A good answer: Boards under the wheels and screens against flying chips.
A good answer: An option agreed before the first hour, with the topsoil cost, so the hole can be turfed.
Getting the quote right
- The rate per hour for grinding, and whether an evening or weekend slot costs more
- The minimum booking, which often covers delivering the grinder, and what is charged if the stump goes quickly
- Who brings the grinder and guards, and whether you need to clear access through the gate
- Which stumps, how deep, and whether surface roots are included, agreed before the first hour
- ID checked and the rating on earlier stump jobs
- Public liability insurance, because a grinder throws chips and can cut a hidden pipe or cable
- Who actually attends — the stump grinding contractor you spoke to, or someone the company employs or subcontracts
- The VAT number if the business is registered, with VAT at 20% on its own line; one under the £90,000 threshold charges none
Walk away if
- No questions about buried services
- Chippings taken away with no carrier number
- No screens or boards near glass and lawns
- Hours that grow on the day once the stump is seen
What a stump grinding contractor costs: £85–£500 per stump
The figures are what one stump usually comes to; booked by the hour, the stump's diameter, access for the machine and what happens to the chippings set how many hours it takes. Stump Grinding price guide →

When the job is done
Hiring a stump grinding contractor: questions people ask
The law has no licence and no register for stump grinding contractors. Taking chippings away needs a waste carrier registration.
Yes. Chippings left on your own land are not being carried as waste.
Expect £85 to £500 a stump, most often near £225. Our stump grinding price guide covers what changes it, and the search above lists stump grinding contractors where you live.
Enough for what goes there next; deeper for a new tree or paving than for turf.
Most roots of a ground stump rot over time; some species sucker and need treatment.
Better a little to one side, after the chippings are removed and the soil replaced.
