BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No statutory register or licence applies to reiki practitioners in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and the title is not protected. Some reiki practitioners join accredited voluntary registers; that is voluntary, not statutory regulation.

Ask the reiki practitioner which qualification they hold, who awarded it, and whether they are on a voluntary register you can search.

Insurance

With no register setting the rules, nothing obliges a reiki practitioner to hold insurance, so ask. Professional indemnity insurance covers harm from the treatment; public liability covers accidents.

Ask the reiki practitioner for the insurer's name and policy dates.

Trader status and cancellation

A reiki practitioner in business is a trader, so the Consumer Rights Act 2015 duty of reasonable care and skill applies. The 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 does not cover leisure services booked for a specific date (regulation 28), so for a one-off session the therapist's own terms usually decide.

Read the cancellation terms before booking and keep the confirmation.

Protected health titles

Health titles such as physiotherapist and the practitioner psychologist titles are protected: only someone on the HCPC Register may use them, and using one without registration is an offence under the Health Professions Order 2001. A reiki practitioner who uses one of them must be on the Register.

If one of those titles appears on the profile, search it on the HCPC Register. hcpc-uk.org →

VAT

Reiki is standard-rated at 20%: reiki practitioners are not on a statutory register, so no health exemption applies. A practitioner over £90,000 must register, charge VAT and show it as a separate line; one under it charges none.

Ask whether VAT is in the price of the session or course, and for the VAT number if so. gov.uk →

“What Reiki training do you have?”

A good answer: The level, who trained them and any voluntary register.

“What happens in a Reiki session?”

A good answer: You lie clothed; the practitioner places hands lightly on or just above you.

“Will you touch me, and can I say no?”

A good answer: Light touch only with consent, and hands-off on request.

“What can Reiki help with?”

A good answer: Relaxation and wellbeing — a Reiki practitioner who promises to cure illness is a warning.

“Are you insured?”

A good answer: An insurer's name for the Reiki practice.

“Do you sell crystals or courses?”

A good answer: Optional, priced separately, and never a condition of treatment.

“What if I feel emotional afterwards?”

A good answer: That it can happen, and advice to rest.

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the receiptWith date and length.
Notice how you feelRest; talk to your GP about any health worry.
Decide freely about moreNo obligation to book a course.
Rate the visitSay what the reiki practitioner did well and what they missed. Unhappy? The make-it-right step comes before the review is published.

STEP 1Go back to the reiki practitioner firstExplain, in writing, what was wrong and what you would accept. If the session was not delivered with the reasonable care and skill that section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 demands of a reiki practitioner in business, section 54 gives you a repeat at no cost or money off.
STEP 2Try the make-it-right stepUnder four stars for a booked reiki practitioner, Locufy asks whether to pass it to them first; we follow it through before the review goes up.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplineNo regulator covers a reiki practitioner. If the reiki practitioner will not engage, refer it to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales (0808 223 1144 in Welsh), Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, or Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claims as the last stepWhere the reiki practitioner still refuses, the small claims routes run to £10,000 in England and Wales, £5,000 in Scotland under simple procedure and £5,000 in Northern Ireland, with no solicitor needed.
