BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Border planting specialists are not licensed or registered anywhere in Great Britain or Northern Ireland. Judge them on the plant list, the preparation and past borders you can see.

Ask for photos of borders a year or two after planting.

Waste carrier registration

Taking turf, old plants and spoil off your property makes the border planting specialist a waste carrier, and every nation requires carriers to register — the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA or the NIEA, depending on where you live.

Get the registration number in writing and look it up by number, name or postcode. environment.data.gov.uk →

Specified certificate for pesticides

For a weedkiller used to clear the ground before planting, the rule is the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012 — a professional-use product may only be applied by a border planting specialist holding a specified certificate, or by a trainee under a holder's direct supervision.

Ask whether the product is professional or amateur, and for a professional one see the certificate. hse.gov.uk →

Public liability insurance

Insurance is not a legal requirement for a border planting specialist. Public liability insurance matters anyway: digging near a boundary can damage a fence post or a buried pipe.

Ask to see the current insurance certificate, with its limit.

VAT

Border planting is standard-rated at 20% when the planter is VAT-registered. A gardener planting on their own below £90,000 in takings charges no VAT and has no VAT number to give.

Ask whether they are VAT-registered and whether the plants are passed on at the nursery price, receipts shown. gov.uk →

“Can I see a plant list for the border with sizes and quantities?”

A good answer: Species named, pot sizes and how many, spaced for the plants' final size.

“How will you prepare the soil in the border?”

A good answer: Weeds dug out, perennial roots removed, compost or soil improver dug in.

“Will the planting suit sun, shade and soil here?”

A good answer: A plan that reflects aspect and soil, not a standard list.

“Do you replace border plants that fail?”

A good answer: A stated policy, usually for a few weeks, if watering advice was followed.

“Will you mulch the border?”

A good answer: A depth and material named, and why.

“What will you do with the old plants and turf?”

A good answer: Composted, reused or taken away by a registered carrier.

“How should I water and care for it this year?”

A good answer: Written advice for the first season.

Getting the quote right

  • The rate per hour for planting, and whether a weekend session is charged higher
  • The minimum booking, and what you pay if the border is planted before the hours are used
  • Who supplies the plants, compost and mulch, and who brings the tools
  • The plant list and where each goes, agreed before the first hour starts
  • ID checked and the rating on earlier planting jobs
  • Public liability insurance and the waste carrier number if old plants and soil leave in a van
  • Who actually attends — the border planting specialist you spoke to, or someone the company employs or subcontracts
  • The VAT number if the business is registered, with VAT at 20% on its own line; one under the £90,000 threshold charges none

Walk away if

  • No plant list, only "a mixed border"

Hiring a border planting specialist: questions people ask

There is no licence for border planting specialists and no register to check. A waste carrier registration is needed to take waste away, and a specified certificate to apply a professional weedkiller.

Only for a product authorised for professional use. Many specialists clear by hand.

Usually £100–£1,500 a job, with £300 typical. The planting & borders price guide sets out the reasons; your town in the search box above shows local border planting specialists.

Autumn and spring for most plants; bare-root plants in the dormant months.

Ask before booking; some specialists replace losses for a few weeks if watering advice was followed.

Either way works. If you supply them, the specialist is not responsible for their health.
