BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No law licenses piano movers in any UK nation. What protects your belongings is goods-in-transit cover, a signed inventory and written terms — and, if they choose to join one, a trade association's code.

Get the contract, the insurance limits and the deadline for damage claims in writing.

Insurance to the piano's value

No law requires insurance, but goods-in-transit cover with a per-item limit below the piano's value leaves you short; public liability covers other people's property, not your piano.

Ask the piano mover for the per-item limit in writing.

Reasonable care and skill

Every service contract includes reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015; careless handling by the piano mover that damages your belongings breaks it.

Cancellation terms

A move booked for a set date is transport of goods, which regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 takes out of the cancellation right. What you lose by cancelling with the piano mover depends on the written terms.

VAT

Moving a piano within the UK is standard-rated, so a registered piano mover adds 20% to the move, the crew and any stairs or access charge. A move to or from a place outside the UK is zero-rated for the part between countries. Registration becomes compulsory once a piano mover has VAT-taxable turnover over £90,000 in any rolling 12 months; from then VAT must be charged and shown as a separate line on the invoice.

Ask the piano mover for the VAT number with the quote and for the move price and VAT shown on separate lines. gov.uk →

“Have you moved this type of piano before?”

A good answer: Uprights and grands are different jobs; they say which they do.

“How many people will move the piano?”

A good answer: Enough for the piano and the route.

“What kit will you bring for the piano?”

A good answer: Piano board or skid, straps, blankets, ramps if needed.

“What is the per-item insurance limit for the piano?”

A good answer: A figure that matches its value.

“How will you handle the stairs?”

A good answer: A plan after seeing photos or visiting.

“Will the piano need tuning after?”

A good answer: Usually yes; they say so.

“What are your cancellation terms?”

A good answer: In writing.
