BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Nothing licenses one-off cleaners in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so a one-off clean can be offered by anyone; trader status, insurance and references carry the weight.

Ask for a business name, an invoice for the one-off clean and the name of the insurer.

Waste carrier registration if rubbish goes

A business that takes waste away needs waste carrier registration — the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA or the NIEA — and in England and Wales section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes you hand household waste only to an authorised person. That applies to bags left over from a one-off clean.

If the one-off clean includes taking rubbish, ask for the waste carrier number and search the public register. environment.data.gov.uk →

Cleaning chemicals and COSHH

HSE applies the COSHH rules to self-employed people carrying hazardous products onto someone else's premises. For a one-off clean, that means knowing what each degreaser, descaler or biocide is and how to use it safely.

Ask which products the one-off clean uses, and whether they are safe on your surfaces. hse.gov.uk →

Public liability insurance

Nothing obliges a cleaner to be insured, but public liability cover is the difference between a claim paid and a dispute if a one-off clean goes wrong. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to a one-off clean done with reasonable care and skill.

Get the insurer's name from the cleaner before booking the one-off clean.

VAT

A one-off clean is standard-rated at 20% where VAT is charged. A cleaner working alone with turnover under £90,000 does not charge VAT and has no VAT number to give, so the hourly rate is the whole bill.

Ask whether the one-off cleaner is VAT-registered; if not, no VAT is added to the hours worked. gov.uk →

“How many hours and cleaners will the one-off clean need?”

A good answer: An estimate in hours from photos or a description, set against the minimum booking.

“Which extras fit into the hours booked?”

A good answer: A list agreed before the first hour, with the oven and fridge given their own time.

“Will you take rubbish away?”

A good answer: Only with a waste carrier number.

“What cleaning products will you bring?”

A good answer: Named, suited to your surfaces.

“Are you insured for breakages?”

A good answer: Public liability, insurer named.

“What if the cleaning runs over?”

A good answer: A rule agreed before starting.

AFTER

When the job is done

Walk the roomsAgainst the agreed list.
Keep the receiptHours and extras listed.
Raise misses that dayIn writing.
Say how it wentYour rating of the one-off clean sits on the one-off cleaner's Locufy profile for others to read. Something wrong? Use make-it-right first and we follow it through.

STEP 1Complain to the one-off cleaner firstContact the one-off cleaner first, in writing, and keep a copy. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the one-off clean must be done with reasonable care and skill; you can ask for the faulty part to be done again free of charge, and if that fails, for some or all of the money back.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right stepA score under four stars opens the make-it-right step: you choose whether the one-off cleaner gets the chance to put the one-off clean right first, and we chase it to an end before you publish.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplinesA one-off cleaner who will not engage can be reported through the consumer helplines, which pass cases to Trading Standards — Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060), Consumerline (0300 123 6262) in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claims, if money is owedIf money is still in dispute over the one-off clean, the small claims routes need no solicitor: up to £10,000 in England and Wales on the small claims track, £5,000 in Scotland under simple procedure, and £5,000 in Northern Ireland's small claims court.

Hiring a one-off cleaner: questions people ask

No. No licence or register applies.

Only if registered as a waste carrier; in England and Wales your duty of care requires it.

Ask about public liability insurance.

£15–£35 an hour, about £22 on average. For what moves the figure, see the one-off cleaning price guide, and search your town above to find cleaners nearby.

Three to six hours, often with two cleaners.

There is no weekly booking behind it, and the first clean takes longest.
