BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Nothing licenses oven cleaners in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so oven cleaning can be offered by anyone; trader status, insurance and references carry the weight.

Ask for a business name, an invoice for the oven cleaning and the name of the insurer.

Cleaning chemicals and COSHH

HSE applies the COSHH rules to self-employed people carrying hazardous products onto someone else's premises. For oven cleaning, that means knowing what each degreaser, descaler or biocide is and how to use it safely.

Ask which products the oven cleaning uses, and whether they are safe on your surfaces. hse.gov.uk →

Gas connections are not cleaning

Under the 1998 Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, and Northern Ireland's 2004 Regulations, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may be paid to work on a gas appliance's fittings. An oven cleaner may move a freestanding bayonet-fitted cooker to clean behind it, but not disconnect anything.

Ask the oven cleaner not to disconnect any gas fitting; book a Gas Safe engineer if one is needed. hse.gov.uk →

Public liability insurance

Insurance is not a legal condition here, yet public liability cover is what pays when oven cleaning marks a floor or breaks a fitting. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to oven cleaning done with reasonable care and skill.

Get the insurer's name from the oven cleaner before booking the oven cleaning.

VAT

Oven cleaning is standard-rated, so VAT is 20%. An oven cleaning business with turnover above £90,000 must be registered, charge the 20% on the oven and any hob or extractor add-on, and show it separately.

Ask the oven cleaner for the VAT number and check the 20% is listed under the oven price. gov.uk →

“How long does the oven need to be off?”

“Is the hob in the oven cleaning price?”

A good answer: Priced as an add-on.

“Are you insured if the oven is damaged?”

A good answer: Public liability, insurer named.

Write the reviewSay what the oven cleaner did well on the oven cleaning and what they did not. If it fell short, use the make-it-right step first, so the oven cleaner can put it right before you publish.

STEP 1Complain to the oven cleaner firstSay what is wrong with the oven cleaning and what you want done about it. Under section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the oven cleaning had to be carried out with reasonable care and skill; if it was not, you can ask the oven cleaner to put it right at their own cost (section 55) or for money off (section 56).
STEP 2Use the make-it-right stepA score under four stars opens the make-it-right step: you choose whether the oven cleaner gets the chance to put the oven cleaning right first, and we chase it to an end before you publish.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplinesTrading Standards is reached through a helpline, not directly: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland can log a complaint about the oven cleaner and pass it on.
STEP 4Small claims, if money is owedAn unpaid refund or repair bill from the oven cleaning goes to small claims: £10,000 is the limit in England and Wales, £5,000 in Scotland using simple procedure, and £5,000 in Northern Ireland — all designed to be used without a solicitor.
