BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Outside London's boroughs, mobile nail technicians need no licence in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland; anyone can trade as a mobile nail technician.

Look at photos of their real clients' nails and ask where they trained.

Special Treatments Licence (Greater London)

In Greater London, outside the City of London, the borough council issues a Special Treatments Licence for premises, and gov.uk lists manicures among the treatments it covers. A mobile nail technician based in a London borough may hold one for their own premises; ask whether their borough licenses home visits.

Look for the licence on the wall, or ask the borough's licensing team. gov.uk →

Insurance that covers the nails at home

Cover is treatment-specific: one mobile nail technician's policy may include the nails at home but not home visits, another the reverse. Public liability insurance is what pays if you are hurt.

A photo of the schedule is enough: it should list the nails at home by name.

Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers a nails at home bought from a mobile nail technician in business. Reasonable care and skill is the standard; below it, you can require the work again or a reduction.

See whether the profile carries the trader badge before you pay, and screenshot what was agreed. legislation.gov.uk →

VAT

Nails done at home are standard-rated at 20% once the mobile nail technician is registered. A mobile business above the £90,000 threshold must charge VAT and show it on the receipt.

Ask the mobile nail technician whether there is a VAT number, and if so, whether the treatment price includes it. gov.uk →

“Are you insured to work in clients' homes?”

A good answer: Yes, named insurer — a mobile nail technician's cover should include home visits.

“How do you keep nail tools clean on the move?”

A good answer: New files, sealed sterilised metal tools and a sanitised lamp for every client.

“What is your travel charge and minimum spend?”

A good answer: Figures in the mobile nail technician's quote.

“What do you need from me?”

A good answer: A table, a socket and good light, and a chair at a comfortable height.

“Can you do several people at one address?”

A good answer: Yes, with a price and time for each.

“Is soak-off of old gel nails included at home?”

A good answer: Yes or no, with a figure.

“What if a nail chips within days?”

A good answer: A free fix on the next visit within an agreed window.

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the booking messageTreatments, price and travel charge.
Check your tableAny gel or acetone marks: tell the mobile nail technician that day.
Use the fix windowEarly chips fixed free — ask how long.
Leave the reviewOnly a nails at home booked through Locufy can be reviewed there. If the nails at home is not right, use the make-it-right step first so the mobile nail technician can put it right before the review goes up.

STEP 1Tell the mobile nail technician, in writingGive the mobile nail technician the chance to fix it: a dated message, photos and the remedy you want. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 standard is reasonable care and skill.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyGive the nails at home under four stars and we ask whether to send it to the mobile nail technician first; we follow it through with them, and then you review.
STEP 3No regulator — Trading StandardsNo body licenses a mobile nail technician, so a nails at home dispute you cannot settle goes to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060) or Consumerline in Northern Ireland (0300 123 6262).
STEP 4Small claims, if it comes to moneyIf the mobile nail technician will not refund or redo the nails at home, you can claim without a solicitor: up to £10,000 on the small claims track in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under simple procedure in Scotland, and up to £5,000 in the small claims court in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a mobile nail technician: questions people ask

Only in Greater London, where the borough's Special Treatments Licence may cover the premises; elsewhere mobile nail technicians need none. Ask a London salon to show its licence before you book a nails at home.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a nails at home that was not done with reasonable care and skill can be redone free or partly refunded. Raise it quickly and in writing.

£25–£60 per visit, typically around £35. Travel distance, gel or extensions and group bookings change it. For the breakdown, read the mobile nail technician price guide; your town in the search box above shows mobile nail technicians near you.

The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give 14 days to cancel a home or online booking. A nails at home you asked to have within that time, and have had, cannot be cancelled after the event.

Often, with the home's permission; ask how they handle hygiene between residents.

Tell them in writing straight away and ask for their insurer's details; public liability covers damage to your property.
