BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Outside London's boroughs, gel nail technicians need no licence in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland; anyone can trade as a gel nail technician.

Look at photos of their real clients' nails and ask where they trained.

Special Treatments Licence (Greater London)

gov.uk lists manicures among the special treatments a Greater London borough licenses, so ask a salon in a London borough offering a gel set whether its licence covers it.

Look for the licence on the wall, or ask the borough's licensing team. gov.uk →

Insurance that covers the gel set

Ask the gel nail technician about insurance before the gel set, not after: policies list the treatments they cover, and anything left off the schedule is not insured.

Get the insurer's name in writing and check the schedule mentions the gel set.

Trader status under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply when gel nail technicians trade as a business: the gel set must be done with reasonable care and skill, and if it is not, you can ask for a repeat or a lower price.

The trader badge shows on the gel nail technician's Locufy profile; save the booking message as your record. legislation.gov.uk →

VAT

Gel polish, builder gel and soak-off are standard-rated at 20% from a VAT-registered gel nail technician. A salon above £90,000 of taxable turnover must register, charge VAT on the set and any art, and print it as a separate line; a home studio below that may charge none.

Ask the gel nail technician whether there is a VAT number on the receipt, and for VAT shown apart. gov.uk →

“Is your lamp matched to the gel you use?”

A good answer: Yes — a gel nail technician who uses one system cures each coat properly.

“Do you keep gel off the skin around the nail?”

A good answer: Yes, every coat — a careful gel nail technician cleans off any that touches the skin before curing.

“Gel polish or builder gel for my nails?”

A good answer: Advice based on your nails, with the price of each.

“Is soak-off of my old gel included?”

A good answer: A yes or no and a price.

“How long should the gel last?”

A good answer: An honest time for your nails, and a free fix window for early chips.

“What happens if I react to the gel?”

A good answer: Stop, remove and advise you to avoid it.

“Can I see your gel work at two or three weeks?”

A good answer: Photos of grown-out gel sets.

Getting the quote right

  • Gel polish or builder gel, on natural nails or extensions
  • Soak-off of the old set
  • Nail art and French tips priced separately
  • The fix window for early chips
  • Who actually attends: the gel nail technician you booked, or another technician at the salon, and whether they are employed or subcontracted
  • The salon's VAT number, with VAT apart from the gel set, the soak-off and the art

Walk away if

  • Gel left on the skin around the nail
  • A lamp and gel from different brands with tacky, undercured coats
  • Peeling gel off instead of soaking
  • No licence on display in a London salon

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the receiptTreatment and price for any fix.
Watch the skin around your nailsItching, redness or swelling: tell the gel nail technician and stop using that product.
Book the soak-offDo not peel — it takes layers of nail with it.
Leave the reviewYour review is tied to the booking, so it carries weight. If the gel set is not right, use the make-it-right step first so the gel nail technician can put it right before the review goes up.

STEP 1Tell the gel nail technician, in writingRaise it within days, by message, not just in the chair. If the gel set was below the reasonable care and skill the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires, ask for a repeat or a reduction.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyGive the gel set under four stars and we ask whether to send it to the gel nail technician first; we follow it through with them, and then you review.
STEP 3No regulator — Trading StandardsNo body licenses a gel nail technician, so a gel set dispute you cannot settle goes to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060) or Consumerline in Northern Ireland (0300 123 6262).
STEP 4Small claims, if it comes to moneyIf the gel nail technician will not refund or redo the gel set, you can claim without a solicitor: up to £10,000 on the small claims track in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under simple procedure in Scotland, and up to £5,000 in the small claims court in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a gel nail technician: questions people ask

Only in Greater London, where the borough's Special Treatments Licence may cover the premises; elsewhere gel nail technicians need none. Ask a London salon to show its licence before you book a gel set.

A gel set that falls below reasonable care and skill breaches the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Ask the gel nail technician in writing for a free redo; if that is refused or fails, ask for a reduction.

£25–£50 per set, typically around £40. Builder gel, extensions, removal and the salon's location push it up. Check the gel nails price guide for the full picture, then search your town above for gel nail technicians close by.

Yes, before booking. If the skin around your nails has itched or swollen after gel before, the gel nail technician may suggest a different product or none.

Peeling it off is. A proper soak-off and light preparation keep the nail healthy.

Tell the technician in writing. Ask for a free fix; a set that fails that fast may not have been done with reasonable care and skill.
