BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Working as a hot tub technician needs no licence or registration in any part of the UK. Ask about the makes they work on and whether they use genuine parts.

Ask for references and a written diagnosis before parts are ordered.

Electrical supply to the tub

Electrical work in a home in England and Wales has had to meet the Building Regulations since 2005; in Wales outdoor work is notifiable. An electrician on the Registered Competent Person Electrical register can self-certify it.

If the supply is new or altered, ask who does it and which certificate you will receive. electricalcompetentperson.co.uk →

Electrical Installation Certificate

New electrical work tested to BS 7671 is recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate, or a Minor Works Certificate for a small job; the certificate is what a buyer or insurer asks for.

Ask for the certificate on the day the wiring is finished. gov.wales →

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance is voluntary for a hot tub technician, and it is the cover that pays out when a leak or a failed heater repair can damage decking or the electrics.

Get the insurer and limit in writing with the quote.

VAT

Hot tub servicing is standard-rated at 20%. A hot tub business with turnover over £90,000 must register, charge the 20% on the call-out, labour and parts, and print it on its own line.

Ask the hot tub technician for a VAT number and check the 20% appears apart from the parts and labour. gov.uk →

“Have you worked on my hot tub make before?”

A good answer: Yes, with the control system named.

“What is the hot tub diagnosis fee, and is it taken off the repair?”

A good answer: A clear figure on the quote.

“Are the hot tub parts genuine or compatible?”

A good answer: Named, with the warranty for each.

“Will this hot tub repair need any wiring changes?”

A good answer: If so, a registered electrician does it and certifies it.

“How should I treat the hot tub water?”

A good answer: Chemicals, doses and testing explained.

“How often should the hot tub be drained and serviced?”

A good answer: A schedule suited to use.

“What warranty do you give on the hot tub repair?”

A good answer: Parts and labour, each with a period.
