BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No statutory register or licence applies to homeopaths in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and the title is not protected. Some homeopaths join accredited voluntary registers; that is voluntary, not statutory regulation.

Ask the homeopath which qualification they hold, who awarded it, and whether they are on a voluntary register you can search.

Insurance

With no register setting the rules, nothing obliges a homeopath to hold insurance, so ask. Professional indemnity insurance covers harm from the treatment; public liability covers accidents.

Ask the homeopath for the insurer's name and policy dates.

Trader status and cancellation

A homeopath in business is a trader, so the Consumer Rights Act 2015 duty of reasonable care and skill applies. A course booked online or by phone can usually be cancelled within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; if you asked for it to start sooner, you pay for what you used.

Read the cancellation terms before booking and keep the confirmation.

Medical titles are protected

Section 49 of the Medical Act 1983 makes it an offence to use a title such as physician, surgeon or general practitioner, or to imply registration as a doctor, when you are not on the medical register. A homeopath who is also a doctor will be on the GMC's register.

If a homeopath uses 'Dr' or a medical title, ask whether they are a registered doctor and check the GMC register. gmc-uk.org →

VAT

Homeopathy is standard-rated at 20%: homeopaths have no statutory register, so the health exemption is not open to them. A practice over £90,000 must charge VAT and show it as its own line; a homeopath below the threshold charges none.

Ask the homeopath whether consultations and remedies include VAT, and for the VAT number if they charge it. gov.uk →

“What homeopathy training do you have, and which register are you on?”

A good answer: A named course and a voluntary register you can search.

“Will you work alongside my GP?”

A good answer: Yes — a homeopath should never tell you to stop prescribed medicine.

“What does the first homeopathy consultation cost, and how long is it?”

A good answer: A price and a length, often well over an hour.

“Are remedies included?”

A good answer: A clear yes or no, and the cost of remedies and postage.

“How many follow-ups do you expect?”

A good answer: An estimate and the total.

“What would make you refer me to a doctor?”

A good answer: Symptoms they would not treat, and willingness to say so.

“Do you treat children, and how?”

A good answer: Parental consent, and a reminder that children's symptoms need medical assessment first.

Getting the quote right

  • First consultation and follow-up fees
  • Remedies and postage priced
  • The VAT number, with VAT at 20% as its own line on consultations and remedies — the health exemption needs a statutory register

Walk away if

  • Tells you to stop prescribed medicine or vaccinations
  • Claims to cure serious illness
  • Uses a medical title such as 'doctor' without being one
  • No insurance to name
  • Pressure to buy remedies in bulk
  • Discourages you from seeing your GP

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep notes and receiptsRemedies given and dates.
Tell your GPWhat you are taking, so they have the full picture.
Review honestlyIf nothing has changed, you do not have to continue.
Close the booking with a reviewReviews on Locufy come from real bookings like yours with this homeopath. The make-it-right step is there first if something went wrong.

STEP 1Go back to the homeopath firstExplain, in writing, what was wrong and what you would accept. If the consultation was not delivered with the reasonable care and skill that section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 demands of a homeopath in business, section 54 gives you a repeat at no cost or money off.
STEP 2Ask Locufy to help put it rightWhen a booked homeopath gets under four stars, you choose whether they see the problem first, and we follow it up with them. Then you review.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplineNo regulator covers a homeopath. If the homeopath will not engage, refer it to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales (0808 223 1144 in Welsh), Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, or Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Take it to small claimsA claim against a homeopath for money back can go to court without a solicitor — £10,000 is the limit in England and Wales, £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a homeopath: questions people ask

No. No statutory register applies to homeopaths in any UK nation, and the title is not protected.

Not to imply they are a registered medical practitioner — falsely using a medical title is an offence under the Medical Act 1983.

No. Talk to your GP before changing any prescribed treatment.

£60 to £95 a session, typically around £78. First consultations are long and cost more; remedies may be extra. See the homeopath price guide for what moves the figure, or search your town above to compare homeopaths nearby.

At 20% if the homeopath is VAT-registered; it is outside the health exemption.

Tell the homeopath in writing; one in business owes reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
