BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

No licence or register applies to dishwasher engineers in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland: the dishwasher repair of a plug-in electrical appliance is not regulated work. The law steps in for gas appliances and for new fixed wiring.

Ask for a business name, the insurer and a written diagnosis before the dishwasher repair goes ahead.

Product recall check

The Office for Product Safety and Standards publishes product safety alerts, reports and recalls on gov.uk, searchable by category including electrical appliances. Some faults are fixed free under a recall, which saves paying for the dishwasher repair; a paid repair is covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 instead.

Search your dishwasher's make and model on the recall list before you book. gov.uk →

Water connections and backflow

Schedule 2 of the 1999 Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations requires fittings that could contaminate the supply to have an arrangement that prevents backflow; Scotland and Northern Ireland have equivalents. A dishwasher's inlet and waste connections are the kind of fitting it covers.

If the dishwasher repair involves the supply or waste connections, ask that they are reconnected with a check valve where needed. legislation.gov.uk →

Insurance and your rights

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 dishwasher repair must be done with reasonable care and skill, and if it fails because of poor work you can ask the dishwasher engineer to redo it at their cost. Public liability insurance covers damage to your kitchen or floor.

Ask the dishwasher engineer who insures them and what guarantee the dishwasher repair carries.

VAT

Dishwasher repair is standard-rated at 20% on the diagnosis, the part and the time it takes to pull out an integrated machine. Once a business's taxable turnover goes over £90,000 it must be registered, and the VAT then goes on the quote as its own line.

Check the dishwasher engineer's job sheet carries a VAT number before VAT is added to it. gov.uk →

“Is the dishwasher diagnosis charge taken off the repair?”

A good answer: Yes or no, before the visit.

“What has failed — pump, valve, element or board?”

A good answer: A diagnosis in plain words.

“What is the dishwasher repair price in full?”

A good answer: Part and labour before ordering.

“Will you check the hoses and valve under the sink?”

A good answer: Yes, for leaks after the repair.

“Is an integrated dishwasher harder to repair?”

A good answer: Yes, more time to slide out and refit, priced.

“What guarantee do you give?”

A good answer: A period for parts and labour.

Write the reviewSay what the dishwasher engineer did well on the dishwasher repair and what they did not. If it fell short, use the make-it-right step first, so the dishwasher engineer can put it right before you publish.

STEP 1Go back to the dishwasher engineerStart with an email to the dishwasher engineer: the problem, photos and what would put it right. A trader's dishwasher repair is covered by section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and the remedies — doing it again, or a price reduction — follow from sections 55 and 56.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right stepGive the dishwasher repair fewer than four stars and you can send the issue to the dishwasher engineer first; we stay on it until there is an answer, and then your review is posted.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplinesTrading Standards is reached through a helpline, not directly: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland can log a complaint about the dishwasher engineer and pass it on.
STEP 4Small claims, if money is owedA claim against the dishwasher engineer that will not settle can go to court without a lawyer — the small claims track for up to £10,000 in England and Wales, simple procedure for up to £5,000 in Scotland, and the small claims court for up to £5,000 in Northern Ireland.
