BEFORE YOU BOOK
Check before you book
No register applies
No licence or register applies to fridge freezer engineers in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland: the fridge freezer repair of a plug-in electrical appliance is not regulated work. The law steps in for gas appliances and for new fixed wiring.
Ask for a business name, the insurer and a written diagnosis before the fridge freezer repair goes ahead.
Product recall check
The Office for Product Safety and Standards publishes product safety alerts, reports and recalls on gov.uk, searchable by category including electrical appliances. Some faults are fixed free under a recall, which saves paying for the fridge freezer repair; a paid repair is covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 instead.
Search your fridge freezer's make and model on the recall list before you book. gov.uk →
Refrigerant work and F gas qualifications
gov.uk's F gas guidance says anyone installing, servicing or recovering refrigerant from stationary refrigeration must hold an F gas qualification certificate; category 2 covers smaller and hermetically sealed systems. Regassing a fridge freezer is that kind of work.
If the fridge freezer repair involves the sealed system, ask which refrigeration qualification the engineer holds. gov.uk →
Insurance and your rights
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 fridge freezer repair must be done with reasonable care and skill, and if it fails because of poor work you can ask the fridge freezer engineer to redo it at their cost. Public liability insurance covers damage to your kitchen or floor.
Ask the fridge freezer engineer who insures them and what guarantee the fridge freezer repair carries.
VAT
Fridge freezer repair is standard-rated at 20%, sealed-system work and refrigerant included. Over the £90,000 registration threshold a trader must charge it and show it separately; under it there is no VAT and no VAT number.
Ask whether the fridge engineer's diagnosis fee includes VAT, and for the VAT number. gov.uk →
A good answer: Thermostat, fan, seal, defrost heater or compressor — diagnosed.
A good answer: A plain answer, and the engineer's refrigeration qualification if so.
A good answer: Part and labour, before work.
A good answer: An honest comparison for a failed compressor.
A good answer: Yes, or check it on a second call.
A good answer: A stated period.
