BEFORE YOU BOOK

Check before you book

No register applies

Nothing licenses conservatory cleaners in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so conservatory cleaning can be offered by anyone; trader status, insurance and references carry the weight.

Ask for a business name, an invoice for the conservatory cleaning and the name of the insurer.

Work at height

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (and Northern Ireland's own of 2005) require work at height to be planned, supervised and done with suitable equipment; HSE says a ladder suits only low-risk work of up to 30 minutes at a time. That shapes how conservatory cleaning above the ground floor is done.

Ask how the conservatory cleaning will reach high areas — pole from the ground, tower or scaffold. hse.gov.uk →

Public liability insurance

No register requires it, but public liability insurance is what pays if conservatory cleaning damages a floor, a fabric or a fitting. Your right to reasonable care and skill in the conservatory cleaning comes from the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Get the insurer's name from the conservatory cleaner before booking the conservatory cleaning.

VAT

Conservatory cleaning carries VAT at the standard 20%. A cleaning business above the £90,000 turnover threshold must register, charge the 20% on the roof, frames and glass, and show it as a separate line.

Ask for the VAT number and check the 20% is listed below the roof and glass figures rather than inside them. gov.uk →

“How will the conservatory cleaner reach the roof?”

A good answer: Water-fed pole or a ladder positioned safely — never standing on the roof.

“Will the conservatory cleaning use a pressure washer?”

A good answer: No, soft brushes and low pressure.

“Is inside included in the conservatory cleaning?”

A good answer: Priced as its own line.

“Will you clear the small gutters?”

A good answer: Yes.

“What if a panel is cracked?”

A good answer: Avoided and pointed out.

“Are you insured if a panel breaks?”

A good answer: Public liability, insurer named.

AFTER

When the job is done

Look from insideClear panels and frames.
Check sealsNo new leaks after rain.
Keep the invoiceScope listed.
Rate the jobTell the next person how the conservatory cleaning went — time kept, mess left, price held. Under four stars, the conservatory cleaner is offered the chance to fix it first through make-it-right.

STEP 1Complain to the conservatory cleaner firstGive the conservatory cleaner a clear written account and a fair deadline. The law treats the conservatory cleaning as a service that had to be done with reasonable care and skill, and where it was not, the trader must redo it at their expense or refund part of what you paid.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right stepIf you rate the conservatory cleaning under four stars, Locufy asks whether to send the problem to the conservatory cleaner first, and we follow it through before your review goes up.
STEP 3Trading Standards, through the helplinesA conservatory cleaner who will not engage can be reported through the consumer helplines, which pass cases to Trading Standards — Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133) in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland (0808 800 9060), Consumerline (0300 123 6262) in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Small claims, if money is owedTo get money back for the conservatory cleaning, the small claims limits are £10,000 in England and Wales, £5,000 in Scotland (simple procedure) and £5,000 in Northern Ireland; court fees start at £35 in England and Wales and £23 in Scotland.
