How to hire a clutch mechanic in the UK
The checks, the questions and the paperwork.

A clutch job is mostly labour, and there is no register of mechanics. Here is how to compare quotes and what to ask about the flywheel.

THE 60-SECOND VERSION

Hiring a clutch mechanic in five steps

  1. Describe the symptomsSlipping under power, a high biting point, judder, noise when the pedal is pressed or a stiff pedal. Each points to a different part.
  2. Ask what the price coversClutch kit (plate, cover, bearing), the flywheel or not, labour and fluid. A dual-mass flywheel changes the bill.
  3. Compare like for likeSame kit brand, same flywheel decision, same labour. The cheapest clutch quote often leaves the flywheel out.
  4. Book a realistic slotMost clutch jobs take a full day in the workshop. Ask about a courtesy car or a lift.
  5. Test drive before you paySmooth take-up, no slip in a high gear, no new noises — then the invoice.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

No register applies

The law sets no licence and no register for clutch mechanics, in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland alike, and anyone may take a gearbox out for a living. The legal standard is the Consumer Rights Act 2015: the clutch work must be done with reasonable care and skill.

Quote or estimate

Citizens Advice draws the line clearly: a quote is a promise to do the clutch replacement for a set price, while an estimate is a best guess that can rise within reason. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if no price was agreed you need pay only a reasonable one.

Ask for a quote, not an estimate, and for a call before anything is added. citizensadvice.org.uk →

The Motor Ombudsman accreditation

Membership of The Motor Ombudsman's codes is voluntary, so plenty of capable clutch mechanics are not in it. Where the business is accredited, the Ombudsman can rule on a dispute about the clutch mechanic once the business has had eight weeks to answer, and a final decision you accept binds it.

Look the business up on The Motor Ombudsman's Garage Finder before you book. businesses.themotorombudsman.org →

Trader status and a written quote

Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply when you deal with a trader. For a clutch mechanic, settle the price up front: where none was agreed you need pay only a reasonable sum, and Citizens Advice says a garage may keep the vehicle over a disputed bill but not sell it.

Check the trader badge on the Locufy profile and keep the quote message. citizensadvice.org.uk →

VAT

A clutch replacement is standard-rated at 20% on the kit and labour. Clutch mechanics over the £90,000 registration threshold have to charge VAT and list it separately from the price.

Ask the garage for its VAT number and for the 20% under the clutch job. gov.uk →

“Does my car have a dual-mass flywheel, and will you replace it?”

A good answer: A clear yes or no, with the reason. A worn dual-mass flywheel should be replaced with the clutch, and that is the big variable in a clutch quote.

“Which clutch kit brand will you fit?”

A good answer: A named kit, and whether it includes the release bearing or slave cylinder. Cheap kits wear faster.

“Is the price fixed, or an estimate?”

A good answer: Fixed for the work listed, with a promise to call if something else — a leaking seal, a worn mount — turns up.

“Will you check the gearbox oil seals while it is out?”

A good answer: Yes. A leaking seal soaks a new clutch; it is cheap to change while the gearbox is out and expensive later.

“How long will the clutch job take?”

A good answer: Usually a day; longer for four-wheel drive or a transverse engine with tight access.

“What guarantee do you give on the clutch?”

A good answer: Parts and labour, by months or miles, written on the invoice.

“Can I see the old clutch plate?”

A good answer: "Yes." A worn plate or a glazed flywheel face is the proof the job was needed.

Getting the quote right

  • The clutch kit named — plate, cover and release bearing — and the brand
  • Flywheel: replaced, skimmed or reused, with the reason
  • Labour as a fixed figure for the clutch job
  • Hydraulic parts (slave or master cylinder) and fluid, if included
  • The garage's VAT number, with VAT under the kit and the labour
  • Guarantee on parts and workmanship
  • Who actually attends to the clutch — the garage's technician, employed or subcontracted

Walk away if

  • A clutch price with no mention of the flywheel
  • An estimate that grows once the gearbox is out, with no phone call first
  • No test drive before handing the car back
  • Will not show you the old clutch
  • Cash only, no itemised invoice

What a clutch mechanic costs: £400–£1,200 per job

Clutch work is quoted as a fixed price per job — kit, flywheel if needed, labour and fluid — because the hours are set by how hard the gearbox is to remove. Clutch Repair price guide →

  1. DiagnoseA road test and inspection confirm it is the clutch, not the hydraulics or a mount, before the price is agreed.
  2. Remove the gearboxDriveshafts, mounts and the gearbox come off to reach the clutch.
  3. ReplaceNew plate, cover and bearing; the flywheel replaced or checked as agreed; seals renewed if worn.
  4. Refit and bleedGearbox refitted to torque, hydraulics bled, fluid topped up.
  5. Road test and handoverA test drive for take-up, slip and noise; you are shown the old parts if you asked.

Clutch kit
The plate, cover (pressure plate) and release bearing sold as one set.
Dual-mass flywheel (DMF)
A two-part flywheel that damps vibration; costly, and often replaced with the clutch.
Release bearing
The bearing that pushes the clutch apart when you press the pedal.
Slave cylinder
The hydraulic part that moves the release bearing; sometimes fitted inside the bell housing.
Biting point
Where the clutch starts to grip as the pedal comes up; high and vague often means wear.
Slipping
Revs rise but speed does not — the classic sign of a worn clutch.

AFTER

When the job is done

Keep the itemised invoiceKit, flywheel, labour and mileage listed. It is the evidence for a guarantee claim and a selling point later.
Drive it before you go farCheck the biting point, pull away on a hill, and listen for noises with the pedal down. Raise anything at once.
Know the clutch guaranteeIn writing on the invoice, by time or miles. Judder or slip in the first weeks is a guarantee question.
Leave the reviewReviews on Locufy come only from booked jobs, so yours counts. If something was not right, the make-it-right step goes first and the garage can fix it before the review is published.

STEP 1Tell the garage, in writingDescribe the fault with the clutch since the repair and what you want done. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to have work that fell short of reasonable care and skill redone at the trader's cost, or a price reduction.
STEP 2Use the make-it-right step on LocufyScore the clutch mechanic under four stars and you are asked whether the garage should see it first; we follow it through, then your review goes up.
STEP 3The Motor Ombudsman or Trading StandardsIf the garage is accredited to The Motor Ombudsman, it can decide the dispute once the business has had eight weeks to reply. If not, take the clutch mechanic complaint to the consumer helpline, which can pass it to Trading Standards: Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133 in England and Wales, Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 800 9060, and Consumerline on 0300 123 6262 in Northern Ireland.
STEP 4Take it to small claimsWhere money is owed back for the clutch mechanic, you can claim without a solicitor: up to £10,000 in England and Wales, up to £5,000 under Scotland's simple procedure, and up to £5,000 in Northern Ireland.

Hiring a clutch mechanic: questions people ask

No. No UK nation licenses mechanics. What protects you is the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which requires the clutch work to be done with reasonable care and skill, and a written quote.

An itemised invoice with the parts, labour, mileage and guarantee. There is no certificate for clutch work.

If it is a dual-mass flywheel showing wear, usually yes, because the gearbox would have to come out again to change it later. A solid flywheel is often reused or skimmed.

Typically £700: the range is £400–£1,200 per job. The clutch repair price guide breaks it down; put in your postcode above to compare clutch mechanics near you.

It depends on driving: town driving and towing wear clutches faster. Slipping, a high biting point and judder are the signs it is due.

Tell the garage in writing straight away. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you can ask for the work to be put right at their cost, or a price reduction, if it was not done with reasonable care and skill.
