THE 60-SECOND VERSION
Hiring a timing belt mechanic in five steps
- Check the intervalThe maker's schedule gives miles and years, whichever comes first. The service book or the last invoice tells you when it was done.
- Ask for a full kitBelt, tensioner and idler pulleys — and the water pump if the belt drives it.
- Get a fixed priceKit brand, water pump, coolant and labour, in writing. Labour is most of the timing belt bill.
- Leave the car for the dayMost timing belt jobs take three to six hours. Book a slot, not a wait.
- Keep the proofAn invoice with the date, the mileage and the kit fitted — the next owner will ask for it.
BEFORE YOU BOOK

No register applies
Nobody licenses timing belt mechanics in the UK, and there is no official register to search. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the belt must be fitted with reasonable care and skill — including setting the engine timing correctly.
Ask for the timing belt quote in writing, with the kit contents listed. citizensadvice.org.uk →
Quote or estimate
Citizens Advice draws the line clearly: a quote is a promise to do the timing belt change for a set price, while an estimate is a best guess that can rise within reason. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, if no price was agreed you need pay only a reasonable one.
Ask for a quote, not an estimate, and for a call before anything is added. citizensadvice.org.uk →
The Motor Ombudsman accreditation
No law requires it, but a business accredited to The Motor Ombudsman's Service and Repair Code has agreed to let the Ombudsman settle disputes. For a timing belt mechanic, that means an independent decision if you cannot agree, after the business has had eight weeks to reply.
Check the name on The Motor Ombudsman's Garage Finder; the logo alone proves nothing. businesses.themotorombudsman.org →
A price agreed before the work
Agree the price for the timing belt mechanic in writing before anything is taken apart. If no price was fixed, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 only obliges you to pay a reasonable one, and Citizens Advice says a garage may keep the vehicle while a bill is disputed but may not sell it.
Get the figure in a message, and ask to be called before any extra work. citizensadvice.org.uk →
VAT
A timing belt job is standard-rated at 20% on the kit and labour. Timing belt mechanics over the £90,000 registration threshold have to charge VAT and list it separately from the price.
Ask the garage for its VAT number and whether the price includes the 20%. gov.uk →
A good answer: The maker's interval for your engine, and whether age alone makes it due on a low-mileage car.
A good answer: If yes, a good mechanic replaces the pump at the same time: it means the same labour twice otherwise.
A good answer: A named kit with belt, tensioner and pulleys — not a belt on its own.
A good answer: A fixed figure, with a call if something else, such as an oil leak from a seal, is found.
A good answer: An honest answer. On many engines it does, which is why the interval matters.
A good answer: Parts and labour, in writing on the invoice.
A good answer: Many mechanics record the date and mileage of the timing belt change in the engine bay as well as on the invoice.
Getting the quote right
- The timing belt kit named: belt, tensioner and idler pulleys
- Water pump: included or not, and why
- Coolant and any seals
- Labour as a fixed figure for the timing belt job
- The garage's VAT number, with VAT under kit and labour
- The guarantee and the date and mileage to be recorded
- Who actually attends to the timing belt — the garage's technician, employed or subcontracted
Walk away if
- A belt-only price with no tensioner or pulleys
- No answer on whether the water pump is belt-driven
- "It looks fine" in place of the maker's interval
- An invoice that does not record the mileage
- No test run before handover
What a timing belt mechanic costs: £300–£700 per job
Timing belt work is quoted as a fixed price per job — the kit, a water pump if driven by the belt, coolant and labour — because the labour time is set by the engine. Timing Belt Replacement price guide →

AFTER
When the job is done
Hiring a timing belt mechanic: questions people ask
No. There is no licence or register for mechanics in any UK nation. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires the work to be carried out with reasonable care and skill.
An itemised invoice with the date, mileage and the kit fitted, kept with the service history. There is no certificate.
If the timing belt drives it, it is usually sensible: the labour is the same, and a failed pump can take the new belt with it.
Most people pay between £300 and £700 per job; £525 is the typical figure. The timing belt replacement price guide shows what changes it, and a search above lists timing belt mechanics nearby.
At the interval set by the maker for your engine, by miles or years, whichever comes first. Your service book or the mechanic can tell you.
Stop and call the mechanic: timing set wrong can cause damage. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you can require faulty work to be put right at their cost.
